Even with this new router, my internet is going very slow.

Hello Forums,
I am having some problems with my Internet lately.
my old router gave me about 3 mb/s (was a link-sys piece of junk)
I usually get 10mbs connection wireless with this new router (computers wired directly to the router get about 20 mbs)
Now I am getting


The computers that are hardwired get around 20 mb/s still.


I have restarted my router and modem with no avail.
Disabling firewall doesn't help
I am using avast antivirus


Is there anything that could have gone wrong? perhaps something either on my computer or some settings I have to change on the router?

What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on routers web page under status.

What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?
Check ISP MTU requirements, Cable is usually 1500, DSL is around 1492 down to 1472. Call the ISP and ask. Link>Checking MTU Values

Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1. Use IE, Opera or FF to manage the router.
Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual or under Setup/PARENTAL CONTROL/Set to>None: Static IP or Obtain Automatically From ISP.
Enable Use Unicasting (compatibility for some ISP DHCP Servers) under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking. This ensures each devices gets its own IP address when turned on and connected, eliminates IP address conflicts and helps in troubleshooting.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
If IPv6 is an option on the router, select Local Connection Only or Disable IPv6 options under Setup/IPv6.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking. Disable uPnP for testing Port Forwarding rules.
Turn off WISH, and WPS under Advanced.
WAN Port Speed set to Auto or specific speed? Some newer ISP modems support 1000Mb so manually setting to Gb speeds can be supported by the router. Advanced/Advanced Networking/WAN Port Speed
Set current Time Zone, Date and Time. Use an NTP server feature. Tools/Time.

What wireless modes are you using? Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N?
Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
Try setting a manual channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear.
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto.
What wireless devices do you have connected?
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many?
Try turning off Short GI, WLAN Partition,and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.
Enable WMM Enable Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Link> Cat6 is recommended.

Router:
 Hardware: DI-655  B1
 Firmware: 2.10NA (tells me it's the most recent version)

QOS: Already off
DNS Services: Already off
Unicasting: Already on
DNS relay: Already on
IPV6: Changing from auto to local only makes my internet way worse. keeping it on auto.
Firewall: changed, but only seemed to help a little bit. (doubled both d-load and u-load to 2 mb/s and 4 mb/s)
UPNP: Already enabled
Multicast streaming: Enabled, but knocked my download to .25 mb/s and upload to .14 mb/s. disabling again
WISH: already off
WAN: setting to 1000 mb/s disables my wifi

I tried the different wireless settings but none helped, and next time you copy and paste, try to leave out troubleshooting techniques that have nothing to do with my problem. such as modem and router connections with the modem.

however, I haven't yet gotten to the inssider tool but I will be later today

And my speedtest graph is completely unstable, if that helps to figure out what is causing it.

What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?

Did this router come with v2.10 loaded or was there a previous version of FW loaded?
How was the FW updated? Using the router or downloading the file from the main web site?
Did this happen before?

I never updated the router software, so I am guessing it was like this when I purchased. Perhaps the router was built sometime last year, (when the version is said to have been from) I tried to download the firmware version directly from the router when it said it was the latest.

Also, this did happen with my old router.

and I hadn't answered your other questions,
I have some walls in the way, I do have a wireless phone, but it's downstairs., also no other devices are connected.

InSIDer says my connection is rated 63 on channel 11, I changed it to avoid the other wireless networks, which were all at 1 and 6. But it still did not fix my issue.

I am thinking that I do have a good connection with my router, but something is preventing it from sending too much data at once.

If you say this happened with your other router, then the problem might be between the router and modem or modem and ISP service. Many problems cause routers not to work well and can be attributed to ISP service, ISP cables and ISP Modems.

What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?

modem is an RCA DHG536C

but why would the hardwired computers work fine when connected to the router?

So do wired devices work when connected to the 655?
Wireless devices do the same thing when connected to the 655 router?

Does 1 wired PC work well if directly connected to the ISP modem?

Swap out cables between modem and 655 router and PCs.

Make sure that there are not t.v. line splitters in line before the ISP modem. This can lower signal and introduce noise on the line as well.

Wired devices work perfectly when connected
Wireless devices are very unstable, although the speeds do increase drastically when close to it, although very unstable (up and down during the speedtest test)

wired pc does work a little better when bypassing the modem (although only tested once, so I doubt the difference matters)

swapping different cables with a new cable doesn't increase speeds for the wireless computer, nor really the wired.

there are no TV splitters in the room, and they are separate lines (the cable for tv and internet socket)

I would do this, do a a factory rest of the router.
Turn off ALL wired and wireless devices accept one for testing.
Setup the wireless for Mixed G and N mode, WPA2 and AES only. Give a SSID name, something other than the default (dlink) name.

Leave all other settings default.

Do some testing with the one wireless device. Check speed settings both wireless and wired.
Turn on another device and test. Graduate adding devices to see if there is any problems.

Wired speed tests should be at speed. Wireless speed tests may vary since there are many variables in wireless that can effect accurate results. We only recommend speed testing on wired connections only.

Maybe someone can review your router settings with you using Link> teamviewer if your interested. Its safe and secure.
