Hello, I installed the DIR-827 router on my sister's computer yesterday.  The setup is quite normal: Cable Modem -> Router -> Computer.  Everything is working perfect (i.e. able to access websites, able to connect/use the wireless) EXCEPT she is now unable to access her Windows Live Mail account.  The password for her is stored in the Windows Live Mail account settings (i.e. she doesn't enter it) and she was using it successfully earlier in the day.  Now the authorization times out.  How do I fix it?

Edit: I am at work but can go to her house at lunch to post screenshots if that is of help.

Youll need to contact Microsoft support for that. The 827 router passes along all email and authentication traffic so there isnt any configuration needed on the router. Check her computer, email client and ISP service for configuration and support.

Okay, thank-you for the reply.  I'll follow-up with the other parties involved.  At worst, I can just switch her to another email client but that is a rather heavy-handed solution.

If it makes any difference, it isn't a Windows Live account but a normal POP3 account with an ISP.  So the username/password isn't authenticating with Microsoft but with the ISP.

What ISP Service does she have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem does she have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model does she have?

1. Cable
2. It only has one ethernet port (along with a printer-type USB) and no wireless capability so I'm assuming Stand Alone.  How do I confirm?

Ok SB 5 Series modems are stand alone modems.

One way to check is to look at the status/device info web page on the router. Look at the WAN/Internet section, if it say 192.168.0.# then the router is getting a private IP address, if something other than 192.168 then your getting a public address and your fine.

Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1. Use IE, Opera or FF to manage the router.
Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking. This ensures each devices gets its own IP address when turned on and connected, eliminates IP address conflicts and helps in troubleshooting.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking. Disable uPnP for testing Port Forwarding rules.

Set Time and Time Zone under Tools/Time.

1. I disabled the QoS.  I couldn't find anything regarding GameFuel in the options.
2. I turned off Advanced DNS Services.
3. I think that DNS Relay was already on.
4. DHCP reserved IP addresses seemed to be already happening (there was a couple of devices listed).
5. I couldn't find anything regarding Endpoint Independent options.
6. I enabled the uPnP option.

The problem is still happening.  I told my sister to just use the ISP's browser-based email client.  I haven't checked in with her today, so hopefully that solution is okay (and isn't mad or something).

If it helps in this forum, the error seen after the authentication/authorization times out is the Socket Error 10053.  I of course did some Google searching but didn't find any solutions promising.

I'll try a support call with the ISP today, maybe they have seen something similar (or can at least tell me whether the mail request even reaches them).

I found one article about 3rd party security programs causing socket errors. You might temporarily disable any firewalls and Anti Virus on the PC to test. Seems like this is a configuration or something on the PC. Keep us posted.

I think the problem is much simplier. What is the error you are getting when trying to send/recieve specifically? Also you can try telnet? First to enable on your PC:

Click Start.
Click  Control Panel.
Now, go to Programs or Programs and Features.
Click Turn Windows features on or off.
In the Windows Features dialog box, tick Telnet Client check box.
Click OK.

Then to see if you can telnet into your ISP's POP server:
Click Start
In the "Search Program and Files" field type CMD and hit enter.
Type "telnet <pop.ISP.net> 110 and Enter   (pop.isp.net is just a example, use what ever your ISP uses)
Type "User <username>" and Enter
Type "Pass <password>" and Enter
It should say User is Welcome here.
If not respond with where it failed.
