Author Topic: Some functions being blocked on wifi but work on wired connections  (Read 30995 times)

I just installed a DSR-500N. I have most things working with one major exception.

Some functions, such as Windows Update, or VPN connections to remote networks, fail when initiated from a WiFi connection. This is consistent across multiple devices. If I take those same devices and connect them over a wired connection the functions then work correctly.

I've gone over and over all of the Wifi options on the router and cannot see anything that might selectively block some activity that is not blocked on the wired connections.

Any help is appreciated.

Link>Welcome!

What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on routers web page under status.
What region are you located?

Has a Factory Reset been performed?

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?
Check ISP MTU requirements, Cable is usually 1500, DSL is around 1492 down to 1472. Call the ISP and ask. Link>Checking MTU Values
For DSL/PPPoE connections on the router, ensure that "Always ON" option is enabled.

Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1. Use IE, Opera or FF to manage the router.
Enable Use Unicasting (compatibility for some ISP DHCP Servers).
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking. Link>Finding Faster DNS Addresses using Name Bench
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. This ensures each devices gets its own IP address when turned on and connected, eliminates IP address conflicts and helps in troubleshooting.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.

Set current Time Zone, Date and Time. Use an NTP Server feature.

Links>Wireless Installation Considerations and Managing Signal Congestion
Ensure the default (dlink) SSID name is changed. Can be anything and not something thats already in use by any neighboring WiFi routers.
What wireless modes are you using?
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto.
What wireless devices do you have connected?
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many?
Try turning off Short GI, WLAN Partition, and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it.
Enable WMM Enable.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

That's a lot of questions... here we go:

firmware version: 1.04B58_WW
region: US? Not sure what you are looking for exactly
factory reset: no... but what would be the point? It's brand new.

ISP: Dual WAN; cable and DSL
modems: Motorola Surfboard 6121 and Actiontek C100A
I'll look into the MTU - that looks possible
The DSL is always on

I could try unicasting, I suppose, but I don't see that as a likely source of the problem as the problem does not show up for wired connections.

DNS Relay sounds like a good idea, in general, but I do not see how it could help this problem.

I have many of the devices on DHCP reserved IPs... it's a long process to get them all there. There are a couple dozen devices going through this router. But that's something I'm working towards regardless. As it stands, however, there are no IP address conflicts and all devices are set to obtain an IP.

Yes, an NTP server is configured.

Yes, the SSID(s) are uniquely set and not in conflict.

Wireless modes G/N on WPA2 only.

There are maybe a half dozen other WiFi routers in range and out of my control.

Not sure what short GI is. I have two SSIDs setup, one is on a WLAN partition. However, that one is not in use at the present time.

Okay, I can try enabling WMM; I hadn't considered that - why should it matter?

Antivirus and firewalls on the PC side are not to blame as the same PCs with the same functions that do not work wirelessly work wired.

"Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing. "

The first half is quite impractical; this is a meaningfully sized network. The second suggestion makes no sense as the problem doesn't exist while wired.

I'll post again after going through the suggestions so far.

- Per ISPs Cable should be at 1500 and it is ; CenturyLink should be at 1492 - and I changed it to 1492 - no difference
- All devices moved to reserved IP addresses - no difference
- WMM enabled - no difference

I recommend that you phone contact D-Link support and ask them why some functions are blocked between WiFi and wired connections. Asked for level 2 support or higher.

Let us know what they say.

I started having even more significant problems with the device; they were related to failures to cannot to the WANs.

I did speak with support about both problems and they are RMAing the unit.

There is v1.06B53_WW (For WW) available that might resolve this:
New Features
1. From firmware v1.06B53 and later, DSR-1000N, DSR-1000, DSR-500N and
DSR-500 can support USB 3G modem which including D-Link DWM-152
A1/A2/A3, DWM-156 A1/A2/A3/A5/A6, Huawei E1550, E173 and EC306.
Note: Only DSR‐1000N and DSR‐1000 can support to configure 3G USB modem as the 3rd WAN
interface.
2. Support VLAN functionalities on WAN interfaces.
3. Support multilingual Web GUI through Package Manager. This solution is
firmware independent which can easily check available language list through
Internet by one click. After that, it can dynamically install/uninstall language
pack.
Note: only one language pack can be installed at a time in order to prevent consuming much
Flash memory. Please remove the installed language before add any other language pack.
4. USB 3G modem driver can be dynamically uninstalled/install through
Package Manager.
Note: Following 3G modem driver has already been built into firmware v1.06B53. D‐Link
DWM‐152 A1/A2/A3, DWM‐156 A1/A2/A3/A5/A6, Huawei E1550, E173 and EC306.

The replacement unit has resolved the Wifi problems I was having.

But the new one has been a bear as well. I don't trust it.

I'm really thinking the DSR-500N is a lemon.

At the moment things are working, unless I enable "WAN Failure Detection Method", with Round Robin, in which case connections are super undependable. With it disabled Round Robin works fine.

But I want it to be able to detect when one of the WANs goes down and in such an event run on the remaining WAN. This actually worked on the router I had RMA'd.

It's so frustrating. I really don't have time to play with this. I've sunk hours into getting this to work. It should be, plug it in, set it up, and then forget about it.

It came with (and is currently running) 1.06B53_WW.

Before the previous one was RMAd, support did have me try a beta firmware, but it made no difference.

I've forwarded this onto my contact at D-Link to see if we can find out about this one feature you need working. Not sure if I'll get any response back however please be patient. Not sure if you want to get back on the phone again and get a hold of support in regards to this. I would give it a try and see what they say. I'll post back if I hear any thing from my contact.
