DNS-326 - Is this a replacement for 323 ?
« on: January 11, 2013, 11:46:02 AM »

I just bought a DNS-326 (haven't received it yet), and I am unable to find any reference to this device anywhere.

I can find this manual however: http://tsd.dlink.com.tw/temp/PMD/5683/DNS-326_A1_QIG_v1.00(B)(press).pdf

Even when I search the Dlink site I find no reference to this model whatsoever.

Is this a new model?  Please note that this is NOT the DNR-326, it is listed as a DNS-326...

I mainly bought it because it advertises that it supports iSCSI initiator which I need for an ESXi host.

I already have a 323 with Funplug installed, and had been thinking about doing the hack to add iSCSI support, but then saw this unit and bought it instead, as it offered iSCSI right out of the box.

Is this some kind of pre-release, or is it a fake or why else am I not able to find much info on this NAS with SAN support?

The DNS-326 was not made for sale in the United States, explaining why there is no reference to the device on this forum, D-Link USA website, or D-Link USA FTP site.

One thing to note is that all of the files on the Taiwan site (TSD) were uploaded back in 2010.

I performed a quick search of some of the D-Link websites for the D-Link European and Asian countries, and so far have not come across any record of the product

Well so far, it seems like quite the little unit, almost like an upgrade to the 323.

It seems to add a few of the feature requests which the DNS-323 lacks (seeing the people in this forum begging for certain things in FW upgrades for the 323), like FTP access, iSCSI initiator support, etc.

I'm sure Funplug will probably also run on it as well so you can install UPS-NUT tools which is another one I always like to add in.

Plus this one has a lot more memory (512mb), which I even remember somebody on the internet post a mod once where they literally soldiered on more memory to the motherboard of a 323, and then added the required hack to make it register the added memory.

The only thing I didn't see was any internal USB slot, so I may have to do like I did to my current 323 and soldier in the internal USB connector which runs off the unused USB controller chip, so I can install Funplug to run off of that.

It's as if Dlink KNOWS what they need to do to make these lower-end products rockin', but just wont add those features for USA release perhaps because it interferes with their other higher-end products which they can sell a lot more of here. Just a guess...

I always think that when I see low-budjet products offer enterprise functionality in countries with worse economies, where in our country where we can 'afford' to pay more for stuff, they force us to buy the enterprise business products if we want things like iSCSI etc...

Another part of the equation may be regional demand. There's a version of the DNS-320L with a white case (sold in the UK) called the DNS-320LW, that never made it to US soil, not to mention the DNS-313, which is a one bay version of the DNS-320, sold exclusively overseas for well over a year now.  :-\

I finally got this unit and I really like that the iSCSI works using the stock firmware!

I am testing it right now using the Microsoft iSCSI software initiator in my netbook with W7... It's seems pretty fast even over wireless, next I am going to test it over the gig ethernet and see how good it goes.

My main plan to get this model (the 326) is because I am building an ESXi host and wanted to use iSCSI backend storage so I think this is gonna work decent enough for that.
