Can anyone help and advice
« on: July 10, 2013, 01:53:44 AM »

Had my DNS 320,had it for a long time now, (Running A1 v2.03 firmware, bought unit in UK) with no real problems that I previously couldn't work out. (no expert just know and understand enough to get by)
But over the last two or three weeks I,ve had real problems accessing the 2x2TB drives in the unit, in as much I have not been able to access the drives from media players dotted around the house, or from windows 7 pc (whole system running through Power line units).
I,ve tried everything that I could think of to remedy this situation with no success, including:-

1/ Transferred, using windows to Linux software, almost 2.5TB worth of files to PC USB connected DAS storage drives then I reformatted the 2x2tb drives in the 320. Disconnected mapped Networked drives, so far so good
Then I transferred maybe 100GB back to each drive using windows to Linux software to enable testing. Again all ok. Setup 320 again on PC and mapped drives again, but again unable to access files on either drive.

2/ After much deliberation decided to try and start from a totally pristine installation of windows 7 on a freshly formatted NTFS drive (thinking that windows networking files may be causing problem or that there might be permissions issues (I read somewhere that this could cause problems)), the only other software I installed was windows to Linux software to enable transferring and viewing of files on and to 320.
So again I reformatted the 2x2TB drives in the 320 and again transferred maybe 100GB back to each drive after mapping drives, but again problem persists.

3/ Tried the above steps again after reflashing again with V2.03 (A1) but no luck. Final act of desperation after downloading firmware V2.02 for A1 and removing drives was to reflash 320 with V2.02. with the intention of then trying steps 1 and 2 again if necessary to try and get things working.
Allowed unit to reflash ok and unit did reboot etc after allotted time countdown. But on rebooting and accessing interface through Google Chrome interface will open Management console then it hangs, therefore I am unable to a/ access screen to carry out any drive operations and b/ cannot access screen to allow flashing of firmware.

So I,am at a loss at what to do next, any help and advice would be very gratefully received by this old silver surfer

Do you have your DNS-320 configured to use a static IP address?  Is your router configured to reserve an IP address for the DNS-320?

If you set a static IP address that conflicts with the reserved IP address you can have an access issue.  If you assigned the DNS-320 a static IP address and another device on your network is also using that same IP address, you may be facing an issue.  If you did reserve an IP address or assign a static IP address, you MUST make sure the IP address you selected is within the assignable range that you've defined in the router (e.g. router is set for 192.168.0.1 to 192.168.0.20, so a valid address is 192.168.0.15)

A good test to perform is placing the DNS-320 and media player on an isolated switch. This test will remove the router and other devices as possible causes for conflict.

Thanks for your reply JavaLawyer, apologies for delay in replying.
This was because I was trying some other self help approaches which did not pan out, with the exception to a strange sort of fix to the the screen hanging after access by Google Chrome issue, to save a lot of typing and probably my inability to explain things correctly I want to include screen shots of my problems and 320 setup etc which hopefully would be helpful and self-explanatory, but unfortunately try as I may I don,t seem to me able to insert pictures into my post, (is there no hope for me).
If anyone can explain to me how to include images into my post it would be a great help.

To post image just upload the pictures to any image hosting site and post the URL link within image tag. For example: [ img ]http://image-URL[ /img ]   <-- remove spaces inside bracket

The easiest method is to click "preview" which will have all the available message option for you to choose from.
