DNS-325 Bricked! (fun_plug)
« on: January 16, 2013, 12:49:00 AM »

Hi All, I am hoping someone can make a suggestion.

I have installed fun_plug 0.7 on my DNS-325 with two WD 2TB drives. Unit worked fine.

Added some mods to fun_plug to allow ffp to be on USB stick, and added to the ffp.log output.

Unit now fails to start up completely. It reaches a point where the disk lights are 'ON' (and USB if one is plugged in), but the power light flashes. The web interface appears, but logging in always ends up with a 'unknown file' error.

I can connect with SSH, but get the error server wouldn't allocate pty. Telnet gives me a blank screen which echoes everything I type, but nothing more (no response to space, 1, 5784468 etc)

I have tried to reset the box to factory defaults, but it doesn't seen to work at all.

Any thought on directions for progress gratefully accepted

You will need to
Quote from: nas-tweaks.net
rename the file fun_plug in the topmost directory of your NAS, reboot, and you are done
Now this advice boils down to the question whether you have access to your Volume_1 at all? Can you map network share? If not, perhaps you can rename the file on disk using external means?

I cannot reach the shares, but should be able to reach the hard disk (remove and connect to either windos with ext2fs, or finally I have a small Linux box).

I will try this. Thanks priitv8

OK  priitv8, I mounted one disk (right hand drive) on my PC, renamed both fun_plug and ffp/.

On powering up the drive, it doesn't seem to get as far as it once did! It ends with the white drive LEDs on, the red LEds flashing, and the white power LED flashing.

I can no longer get any connection (ping, telnet, ssh, web), and it is not found by the setup wizard.

I see a coin cell on the bottom of the main board - any idea what this is for?

So where next? format the disks, try different ones, ....

Help please, other wise the dns is junk!

Blinking in red drive lihts indicate a drive malfunction.
The bottom line would be to erase all partitions from disks and insert them into NAS.
At that point they should get reformatted (if physically fit for the task) and you should be set again.
You might want to back up your data, obviously, if already not done.

I have tried putting in another disk (I have a spare 1T WD drive), but I have the same end result.

I removed the partitions on the drive, inserted it (rh slot) and powered up.

The unit ends up with the one drive light on, both red lights flashing, and the power light flashing.

Neither the reset nor power button do anything.

Is there a more drastic 'reset' function, or a way to clear enough of the internal flash, or have I screwed up the hardware somehow?

That's all we have: http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=51309.0
FunPlug per se should not have bricked your device. It has not for most of us.

Hmm. I think that I may have filled /usr/local/config with a log file which has caused the mess up - no justification for that but thats the area I changed.

Not good, but I'll keep plugging on!

Thanks for you help

Thanks for your help - it has gone back to DLink - it was still in warranty.
