DIR-657 to expand ASUS RT-N16
« on: January 18, 2013, 02:26:53 PM »

Can an AMPLIFI DIR-657/1000 be used to add 4 ports to my existing ASUS RT-N16?

Devices connected via the wired-only Linksys switch I have are not responding & I need more ports!

Devices I need to add include two WeatherDirect wireless links and a SiliconDust HD Homerun box.

Try this: Turning a router into an AP.
You'll only get to use 3 ports though.  ::)

Let us know if it works for you.

I'm working through the steps in the linked instructions.

One of them caused me to lose the connection between the laptop & the D-Link so I had to Reset and start again.

OK, I must have missed something ...

I can see devices connected via the D-Link but they are not responding (same as with the Linksys).

I can connect wirelessly to the D-Link but I cannot log in to 192.168.0.50

I'll look here for suggestions tomorrow ...

Thanks!

Ok, I would start over, do a factory reset.
Use 1 PC and connect the pc to the 657. Don't connect up anything else and don't connect the 657 to anything else, just you, PC and 657.

Now to set a static IP address on the PC so set up say .49 and use same sub net mask.

You should be able to follow the steps in the sticky. Just turn off everything, SPI, and and all filters, uPnP, Traffic Shaping WISH, WPS things like that first. Save and reboot. Then go in and set up the Wifi. Now SSID and password can be the same however you need to manually set a Channel that is different from all the others. So I recommend if you use channel 1 on the main host router, use 11 on the 657. Save settings and reboot.

Now lastly, change the IP address of the router to .50 and the subet mask and gateway should be the same as the host routers information. Save and reboot. You still still have access to the 657 using the new IP address.

If so, then power off the 657 and reset your PC back to Auto obtain IP addressing.

Connect the 657 to your main host router using the LAN port in back. DO NOT USE THE WAN PORT!. LAN to LAN only. Power up. You might want temporarily turn off the WiFi radio on the host router to test the 657 in AP mode and ensure devices are connecting properly to it and getting internet access.

I pretty much did all of that the second time through, at least I tried, even checked things off as I went.

When I connected to the ASUS I made sure nothing was connected to the D-Link.

I can connect wirelessly to the D-Link or the ASUS, so they seem to be playing nicely together via WiFi.

The problem is the failure to get full pass-thru of connected devices and the inability to connect to the D-Link to edit settings.

Perhaps tomorrow I will pull it down, again, and isolate it on the laptop, and see what setting may be wrong.

BTW: Is it possible that some setting in the ASUS may be causing this? I had the same symptoms with the Linksys wired-only switch.

Check cables and settings in main host router. Anything is possible. If you've set up the 657 correctly and wired it up, it should be working with the main host router. You'll need to check with the Mfr of the man host router to see what, if anythig, could be preventing the 657 from working with the router.

Maybe someone can review your 657 settings with you using Link> teamviewer if your interested. Its safe and secure.

Keep us posted.
