firmware upgrade ??
« on: May 13, 2009, 10:27:48 PM »

hello out there...

i was curious, if i pull put my two hdd`s and try to do a firmware upgrade can i avoid data loss ?
or inserting a diferent single hdd ? (i have a 320gb hdd that i keep around here)

i don`t have the means to move 800GB of data (mostly very sensible)

i have the dns-323 for almost a year, with 2 x western digital 1000FALS in RAID1
there are no problems with my current 1.06 firmware, i`m just asking to know in the future...

and another thing, the easy search utility doesn`t see the device anymore..
i have some bittorrent issues, so i read in a topic that i should do a client upgrade using easy search utility..

i have tried another pc, or with the lan cable straight to the dns, with firewall off, and still... no device shows in the easy search utility

many thanks

1.07 does not format the drives.
For any firmware that says it is destructive (ie will format the drives) there is not much you can do... the unit will want to format them when you insert them.  an example would be if the unit changed file system formats again.

arghh...

so if i upgrade the firmware with a single 320gb hdd (the future 1.08 firmware for example)
when i install my two 1TB drives, the device will want to format them again ?

damn!

i`m not interested in the 1.07 firmware, cause it doesn`t bring any new features or bug fixes  ;D

No, no. As Arvald wrote, upgrading the firmware will not format your drives (usually) except in the case of file system change - as it was of the time of the FW 1.01 to 1.02 or 1.03: the file system changed from ext3 to ext2.

Start by reading the firmware release notes, those will tell you whether or not a reformat will be required.

Prior to v1.03 you had a choice of ext2 or ext3 file systems, support for ext3 was removed in v1.03 - if you were using the ext3 file system the upgrade to 1.03 would have required a re-format, if you were using ext2, it would not have been necessary.

There was also a disk partition structure change made with the introduction of v1.05 (if memory serves correctly, you can verify this from the release notes), so an upgrade from 1.04 or earlier to 1.05 or later will also require a re-format.

Whether or not a re-format is required with 1.08 will depend on the changes made in 1.08, as an example, other devices in the DNS-3x3 line up now support the ext3 file system, so it may be reintroduced - if this happens, and if you choose to use it then you will need to re-format, if it is reintroduced and you choose to stay with ext2 then a reformat will probably not be required.

The only way to know is - to read the release notes.

Go to bestbuy and get a 1TB external drive for temp storage. When done return to bestbuy saying it was the wrong part or doesn't work with your system.

Go to bestbuy and get a 1TB external drive for temp storage. When done return to bestbuy saying it was the wrong part or doesn't work with your system.

I would consider that abuse - the returned drive, having been opened can no longer be sold as new and must be marked down.  Whilst US consumer rights laws allow it, it pushes the retailers costs up and they in turn will pass those costs on, so we all pay the penalty.

When considering action like this there are two things to be aware of - both from a security stand point...

 - even if you delete those files or format that drive, your data can still be recovered by someone with the appropriate tools and knowledge
 - you still don't have a backup

Just buy the drive and keep it.
