DIR 645 Dropped Connection
« on: February 13, 2013, 07:36:01 AM »

Got a problem with my new DIR-645 router, I got it new, and immediately upgraded it from the 1.00 firmware to  1.03. It has worked fine for the last week or so, and then yesterday and today it has been dropping my VPN connections, and my normal connections as well. I currently have 8 systems attached via WiFi and LAN. So I'm wondering if anyone has some recommendations for me. I've searched online, and there have been similar issues, but I haven't seen any answers that would fix the issue.

I'm wondering if I should just return the unit to Amazon, and get the DIR-826L.

Side note: Just upgraded from my older DIR-655 which had been working for the last 6 years just fine, but begin to drop or not assign ip addresses to my systems. So I figured I should upgrade.

Link>Welcome!
What region are you located?
Are you wired or wireless connected to the router?
Has a Factory Reset been performed before and after the FW was updated? Was this happening before the update?

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
Check ISP MTU requirements, Cable is usually 1500, DSL is around 1492 down to 1472. Call the ISP and ask.

Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1. Use IE, Opera or FF to manage the router.
Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking. This ensures each devices gets its own IP address when turned on and connected, eliminates IP address conflicts and helps in troubleshooting.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
If IPv6 is an option on the router, select Local Connection Only or Disable IPv6 options under Setup/IPv6.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking. Disable uPnP for testing Port Forwarding rules.
WAN Port Speed set to Auto or specific speed? Some newer ISP modems support 1000Mb so manually setting to Gb speeds can be supported by the router. Advanced/Advanced Networking/WAN Port Speed
Set current Time Zone, Date and Time. Use an NTP server feature. Tools/Time.

Link>Wireless Installation Considerations
What wireless modes are you using? Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N?
Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
Try setting a manual channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear.
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto.
What wireless devices do you have connected?
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many?

Turn off WISH, and WPS under Advanced.
Try turning off Short GI, WLAN Partition, and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.
Enable WMM Enable Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.

Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing. Then graduate turning on the next one and so on.

Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Link> Cat6 is recommended.

I recommend you test the above suggestions on your 655 as well. The 645 is a good unit as well. This maybe some configuration or external conditions effecting the operation of both.

Located in the South Eastern US.
My ISP is EPBfi.

Regarding the settings, I had previously disabled the QOS, and Advanced QOS/DNS, and have not switched them on.

I have a mixed N & G connection, for some of the systems that only have the WiFi G etc.

WiFi is working fine, and so is the LAN, but when I connect out to the FiberOptic, the router is the issue with VPN and sustaining a great connection with normal network activity. That's why I was asking, I have already tried everything else, before coming here on the forum to ask, if there were any other solutions.

Does D-Link have any firmware upgrades beyond the 1.03 for the DIR-645, or have they stopped support for it? Since the last upgrade is few months old.

Regarding my DIR-655, it's old and has over heated, so I think that has made it age quickly, and it was time to upgrade. I did just a few months ago, upgrade it's FW, and it worked better for awhile, and then it just went downhill from there.

I am seriously thinking of getting the DIR-826L or the DIR-855L, unless they have VPN issues as well.

Is there a ISP Modem connected to the 645? If so, What ISP Modem make and model do you have? How is the DIR-645 connected to the ISP and what modes is it using? DHCP I presume? Devices connected directly to the 645 or are there any switches in line? Any more information regarding this and some of the questions asked would help us get a better idea of what is going on. Please try some of the suggestions as well as it might help.

What are your ISP speeds UP and down? You may want to try some of the suggestions and set up Reserved IP addresses for these devices, then set up a QoS rule for them.
Please review this for examples of QoS setup:

Could be something that with all devices being online at the same time, something could be getting dropped or disconnected prematurely. QoS may help with with this. Is one VPN connection stable with one device? Or is it happening regardless? Does it happen with out being connected to the 645?

v1.03 is the most current version and the DIR-645 is still LIVE and supported. If your needing more information, I would recommend that you phone contact DLink support and ask for level 2 or higher support and see if there is any information regarding this or VPN configuration. I have only one user at home that uses VPN and I believe is passive so I've never had to configure anything specifically for VPN. I presume if I had as many as you do then I think that QoS configuration would need to be set up.

I just bought the 826L and waiting for it's arrival. The 855L has not been released yet.

My connection is a dedicated fiber optic line to the router, via cat6. I have 4 devices directly connected, and another 4-6 on WiFi. Haven't had any issues with the IP conflict once I got them assigned.

Regarding the settings, I had previously disabled the QOS, and Advanced QOS/DNS, and have not switched them on.

My ISP speeds are 56+ Up/50+ Down, so there really isn't any congestion that I can see, so far.
I guess I could try setting up a QoS.
Even with just one connection, the VPN continues to drop after a few moments or minutes, while connected to the router. If I have a direct connection (bypassing the router) there aren't any issues.

It's a DIR-655, P/N BIR655ANA...A2, so the A revision, which is not supported since 2010. Updated to ver. 1.35

Yes, I was thinking before the 855l, getting the 826 to cover the time between releases.

There are Traffic Shaping speeds that should cover your connection speeds with your ISP. I recommend testing with Traffic Shapping ON and setup a QoS rule. Set the priority to something low first then test with a higher priority.Ensure you do reserve IP addresses ON the router for each device. Try the different NAT options as well, recommended is EndPoint Indpendent.

I'll let you know how it goes when I get mine. Should be in this week.

Well first thing we want to do is isolate the problem. Is there ever a time when the VPN drops and your normal internet does not? Or your normal internet drops but not the VPN? When you lose the VPN on one computer do all the VPN's drop? When you lose internet on one computer, do they all drop? Trying to see which issue is causing which, or perhaps its a 3rd unknown issue causing both.

Second, what kind of VPN do you have? Don't tell me anything private ofcourse, but just in general:

1. What protocol? IPSec or PPPTP?
2. Does it use a software client or some physical device connected to the DIR-645? If so, what device?
3. Are you running multiple VPN sessions? On multiple computers?
4. Did you do anything special with the DIR-655? Any port forwarding or anything like that?
5. Does the VPN software (assuming its a software client) have any log function that might tell us why the VPN is dropping? Also, check the router logs (more info on page 107 of this manual.)

As for Firmware, 1.03 is the latest, and only about 3 months old. I also checked if it was VPN compatible, and according to specs, it is. Supporting and being good at it are two different things though. ::fingers crossed::

Well I've "daisy chained" the 655 and the 645, with the 655 running the main connection, and vpn systems. While the 645 provides the WiFi, as the secondary router. It's working ok for the moment, although there are lags in connectivity for the WiFi connected devices. Have a new router on the way.

How is the 645 connected to the 655? WAN to LAN ports?
I recommend following this:
Turning a router into an AP.

Good Luck with new router.
