Hi all,
Two unrelated questions:

1.
Is anybody using NAS for a boot backup from LAN? I want to start the computer no matter what happens to its internal hard drives. If I remember correctly there is an option to "boot from LAN" in some computers. Yes, I have DriveClone and can create a boot CD, but having everything ready in my NAS is much simpler then remembering where did I park the CD I created 9 months ago...

2.
Does anybody have Transmission installed on firmware 1.08 and where did you get it? The only link I find doesn't work [http://kylek.is-a-geek.org:31337/files/Transmission-2.01-1.tgz]. Yes, I would like to have the latest version (2.01). In the installation guide [http://forum.dsmg600.info/t2719-[REL]-Transmission.html] it's asked to check for cURL and uclibc or reinstall them. I don't know neither if I have them, nor if they are the correct version. Any suggestion on these steps too?

P.s. By the way, the official BitTorrent add-on is so so so so so buggy. After less then 20 downloads in the list, the web interface hangs and a restart is needed. The problem seem to be old, but has not been corrected. When I kill the /web/webs process and start it again, the web interface hangs waiting for a BT response (see below). Only restarting the BT add-on resolves the problem. And I am afraid I loose seed and peer connections each time I restart BT (or the machine).

Let me ask a third question please.

I read around that a script is needed to make a clean restart if you have fun plug installed. This is because the machine cannot unmount the HDD before stopping.

Is this still needed or recent firmwares take better care of the reboot processes?

What you're asking about cannot be achieved with an "unhacked" DNS-323.

"Boot from LAN", in addition to requiring BIOS support from the computer also requires a DHCP server with support for the requisite DHCP options, along with a TFTP server for the boot image.

Just to update the thread. I could install Transmission 2.01 with firmware 1.08. The above link for download became available the next day and I just followed the instructions (had to install also cURL, see instructions). The daemon is working OK but for some reason I found it stopped this morning. Just had to restart it again. Could be because it is verifying the data of incomplete downloads I moved from the old BT folder (30-50 Gb each torrent). Probably for the same reason the load on the NAS is still high as with the official BitTorrent add-on (around 3-5 seconds average). The web interface is cool, easy and fast.

One thing I noticed. After restarting Transmition today I noticed the downloads were slow. After some inspection I discovered the incoming port I changed yesterday to 6881 was back to 51413. I changed it again, hope it staies like that now.

Still remain open the third question. Do I need to run a cleanboot script before when turning off the device?

The built in web interface is pretty basic. If you want a nice one (uTorrest-ish), then check out this link http://code.google.com/p/transmission-remote-dotnet/

The original BT client is resource intensive and you should get rid of it asap.

Before restarting, check the log for errors if you want a clue as to why it is exiting. Mine runs for weeks and never disappears without notice.

You can power down / up without running anything special. Once FFP and the associated programs are installed and configured, they will shutdown and restart cleanly.

Do you refer to a particular configuration of FFP? I simply installed it and didn't touch anything else.

The basic install should be fine.
