DIR-835 dropping connections
« on: March 07, 2013, 07:26:20 PM »

Hi! I am in Vancouver, Canada and just acquired a DIR-835 Hardware version A1 and am accessing it through a wired connection.  I upgraded to FW 1.04 immediately after purchasing the router.

I am accessing the internet via a Motorola SB 5101 stand alone cable modem.

My connection to the internet is extremely flaky with disconnections happening.  I am having a difficult time with downloads, connecting to gmail, etc.

I have done all of the items listed in the "some things to try" under a couple of other posts here to no effect.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks!

How are you connected to the router, Wired or Wireless?
What was the reason for upgrading after you bought it?
Did you test the router before upgrading?
What a factory reset performed before and after the upgrade?

Does this happen on more than one device?

Check ISP MTU requirements, Cable is usually 1500, DSL is around 1492 down to 1472. Call the ISP and ask.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Link> Cat6 is recommended.

How are you connected to the router, Wired or Wireless?  Wired
What was the reason for upgrading after you bought it?  Since they fixed a number of issues it appeared the right thing to do.
Did you test the router before upgrading? Yes
Was a factory reset performed before and after the upgrade? After but not before

Does this happen on more than one device? yes

Check ISP MTU requirements, Cable is usually 1500, DSL is around 1492 down to 1472. Call the ISP and ask.  1500

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.

Internet works as advertised when connected directly to the cable modem.

Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Link> Cat6 is recommended.

Using CAT5 which is wired into the house.  But it is not cable since this is happening on other devices

Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual or under Setup/PARENTAL CONTROL/Set to>None: Static IP or Obtain Automatically From ISP.
Enable Use Unicasting (compatibility for some ISP DHCP Servers) under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking. This ensures each devices gets its own IP address when turned on and connected, eliminates IP address conflicts and helps in troubleshooting.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
If IPv6 is an option on the router, select Local Connection Only or Disable IPv6 options under Setup/IPv6. This is a big one to check for.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking. Disable uPnP for testing Port Forwarding rules.
WAN Port Speed set to Auto or specific speed? Some newer ISP modems support 1000Mb so manually setting to Gb speeds can be supported by the router. Advanced/Advanced Networking/WAN Port Speed
Set current Time Zone, Date and Time. Use an NTP server feature. Tools/Time.

Link>Wireless Installation Considerations
What wireless modes are you using? Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
Try single mode G or mixed G and N on 2.4Ghz and single mode N on 5Ghz?
Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
Try setting a manual channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear.
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto.
What wireless devices do you have connected?
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many?

Turn off WISH, and WPS under Advanced.
Try turning off Short GI, WLAN Partition, and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.
Enable WMM Enable Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Other than this, you can try the following:
1. Download the v1.02 first to a wired PC. http://www.dlink.com/ca/en/support/product/dir-835-wireless-n750-dual-band-router Turn OFF ALL other devices.
2. Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
3. Disconnect the ISP Modem cable from the router. You don't need to be connected to the internet or modem.
4. Using IE only, Do a factory reset using the UI or the back button. Please do not use Chrome.
5. Once the router is back to ready, skip the set up wizard and log in and use Tools/Firmware to send the unpacked v1.02 .bin file. Let it process the file.
6. After it comes back to ready, do one more factory reset. Reconnect the WAN cable from the ISP modem.
7. Set up the router from scratch using default settings at first. Check the internet and speed test sites.

If it's stable, then go in and set up the router using some of the items mentioned. I'll post other suggestions if the router is stable after the downgrade.

Let us know how it goes.

I could not locate 1.02 as it no longer appears on the DLink site.

However, rolling back to 1.03 seems to have solved the problem.

Thanks very much for your help.

Glad you got it working.

There is v1.02 on the CA web site. It's not listed on the U.S. web site for some reason.  ???

Glad v1.03 is working well for you.

Enjoy.
