*URGENT, NEED HELP!* HughesNet not working with router
« on: April 06, 2013, 08:41:29 PM »

Let me explain it, so we got our grandmother a ipad and a Dir-655 router (that was our router). She lives in awhole nother state and has crapy hughesnet internet. So i setup the router by factroy restoring it and set up her SSID and her passcode and connected her ipad to it while i still had the ipad with me. It worked just fine with me when i plugged the ethernet cable into the back of my centrylink modem and into the WAN port on the router. So we sent the ipad and router to her. She opened up the box and got her ipad and all the stuff out. I talked her through the steps to plug in the router to the power and to unplug the ethernet from her laptop and then into the WAN port and then the ethernet cord i sent her into the routers LAN1 port and into her laptop. Well it didn't go so "plug-in-play". It was picking up the ip address (the one that connects to the WWW not the lan ip) but it isn't loading any pages. It works just fine when she plugs the ethernet into her laptop from the modem but not into the router. I talked her through the steps to get teamviewer and she got it but when i connect to her computer to control it and i connect to the router via WiFi and the hughesnet modem is plugged into the computer via ethernet and i try to go to the routers control pannel (192.168.0.1) it goes to the hughesnet modem control pannel. But if i have her disconnect the ethernet from the computer and have her go to the 192.168.0.1 it goes to the Dlink page. Id have her do it but its to confusing for her to have it talked through to her (it took me ten min to tell her how to plug in the router to the power and all the cables lol). Anyways i need help with this, any ideas?

Does the SAT modem have a built in router by chance?
This could cause as issue with an external router.

Your best bet would be to have someone go to her home and help her set it up. The SAT modem might have a router built in and if so, using a DIR-655 isn't the best for this, If your just trying to set up Wifi, you might use one of the following instead:
D-Link DAP 1360, 1513, 1522, 1525, 1533

Well that sucks as we just sent it to her and she lives in the middle of nowhere basicly and doesnt even have a adress there lol. Anyways i found something online about trying to go and change the routers IP adress becuase the hughes one uses the same 192.168.0.1  ip as the router so ill try that in the morning and if that doesnt work ill go and buy a new router... Oh and the modem doesnt have a router in it if it did itd make things a hell of a lot easier lol

If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.
Double NAT
To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged.
If the modem can't be bridged then see if the modem has a DMZ option and input the IP address the router gets from the modem and put that into the modems DMZ.

Keep us posted.
