DAP-1522(+DIR-855) and performance (and some experience)
« on: May 25, 2009, 04:06:02 PM »

Hi,

I'm running a DIR-855 (Hardware Rev. 1A, Firmware: 1.13EU) and have a DAP-1522 as a bridge. And I'm not at all happy with the performance.

Before I got the DAP-1522 I used a cheap Linksys WRT160N with DD-WRT to bridge the network in my livingroom with the network in my home offce. I was then able to get above 50 Mbps (and still are if I power it up). With the DAP-1522 I get something like 20-25 Mbps. It didn't get any better going from the 1.12 to the 1.13 firmware for the DIR-855. I have the 1.11-firmware for the DAP-1522 (I can't see anything newer, even if this is over 6 months old now..). From pc's to the DIR-855 I get good performance too.

I have tried both 2,4 and 5 GHz; I get somewhat better performance with 5 GHz (3-4 Mbps). I have tried both "20 MHz" and "20/40 MHz Auto". Question is maybe if there anything I can do on the DIR-855?

I have to have 802.11g-support enabled as I have a couple of older pc's. They are not used much, so normaly there ain't any .11g's in my network. There is a lot of other 2,4 GHz wlans in the neighbourhood (around 15 that I get preatty decent signal from). But, between the units I use 5 GHz since that gives the best performance, so the other networks should have much of an impact.

Could it maybe help to set the 5 GHz-net on the DIR-855 to 40 MHz only?
Other suggestions?

House ain't large, and the signal have to travel about 5-7 meters I guess, through a pretty thin floor. The DAP-1522 is somewhat close to a pc (closed) and a couple of NAS-units, but the Linksys did well on the same location (and have internal antennas, and is running with standard settings for the DD-WRT bridge/client-setup).

On the other hand the connection have been very stable. I also notice that streaming video is better with the DAP-1522 even if I don't get the same performance. With the Linksys WRT160N with DD-WRT I got better performance when e.g. downloading a file from the net (30/30 Mbps broadband-connection) or transfearing files between pc's, but when streaming to my Popcorn Hour I could get problems with HD with high bitrate. So even if it seems I have worse performance, the DAP-1522 workes better for streaming.
