spaces in users names and group assignments
« on: May 05, 2009, 01:32:53 PM »

Hi,

I have a DNS-321 and I was wondering if in the new firmware release (if this has not been addressed) will fix the unit and address/allow the following...

1) Will there be support for user ID's that have a space in them for example, 'Joe Black'. I have users that are setup to log on to an XP-PRO workstation with a First name, SPACE, Last name and there is no support for that. I have to set access (single account with full access) for all users on the network in order for them to access the drive. I did test this with a single name user and there was no problem accessing the unit but I am not going to rename all my users to fix a small problem. (As a foot note to this I have another NAS from L#$@% and there is no problem with spaces in names.)

2) In relation to the above the grouping of users is also a problem. I can add one user to one group share and only one. If I try to add them to another share they are not allowed. For example, I set up two folders named DATA and PICTURES, I then create two groups that have access to the two folders and I want to add Joe to both of them, I can't. So I have to set up the shares so everyone can access them to allow Joe access to them and other folders that Joe does not need to access.
(I setup folders, assign groups to the folders and then add the users to the groups.)

Another example:
DISK1 has folder1 folder2 folder3 folder4
Group1 has access to: Folder2
Group2 has access to: Folder1
Group3 has access to: Folder 1,2
Group4 has access to: Folders 3,4
Group5 has access to: All (admin group)

Now, If I wanted to add Joe to say group2 & 4, I can't. It defaults him to the last group that he was added to.

3) The "Sender email" address is not showing up on emails sent from the unit, the "From:" field is blank. Also, I would like to see the messages be customizable and the time the "Space Status" emails are sent configurable to a specific time (i.e. 3:15PM everyday or once a week).

4) Under the "Downloads" login, I would like to see an option there for "disable" rather than "Anonymous or a User".

5) I did not see any option settings for the Secure FTP setup on the DNS-321 which I saw noted in the release notes.

6) This is a wish, Is there a way to allow an FTP users to write to a folder but no be able to read/modify?
I want to have someone FTP a file to me but I don't want to make hundreds of folders and PW for each just to keep a file that was uploaded from being deleted or downloaded by someone that should not have access to it.

Thanks!

You can check out the beta code and the Release notes in the DNS-321 child board to see what is in the works for the next official firmware release.

Thanks for the update and I did not see that board before. It's nice to see some of the planed fixes. I hope that some of my (and I'm sure others) wishes makes it to the final release (else yous' guys/gals will be back at it!)
