My DIR600 makes strange things!
« on: April 09, 2011, 08:12:03 PM »

Hello

I upgrade from 11g to 11n buying a DIR600 after selling first my old DI524, which worked flawlessly for many years!

I begun to have trouble as soon as I connected the device, the computers with wireless begun to loose connections at random, and the internet ISP connection gets reset every hour or sometime once a day.

This new DIR600 appliance is very strange, the web-pages of the setup are slow, tried with many machines, adn still slow. Called local Dlink  0800xxx service support, and was instructed to upgrade my firmware to last version, the actual is (copy from page) Hardware Version : Bx    Firmware Version : 2.05

Sometimes, the login screen delayed over 20 to 30 seconds to serve a byte (192.168.0.1), other times it works fast, its unpredictable!. When in slow mode, to change a tab in the configuration you may have to wait from 5 second to several (10-20) seconds to respond, Unbelievable! for a small appliance with no traffic and a dedicated render machine inside (presumably a downgraded linux kernel inside). The old DI524 was blazing fast, and other equipments of other manufacturers are also fast in that way.

Second: I was astonished that the range (maximum distance) was shorter, I saw the RF power is VERY LOW (13dB mW vs. 17db mW on the DI524) incredibly low and strange fluctuations an the output, may be due to the N algorithms, but works bad!. Measuring withan Android Phone to check the range, I saw the signal was fading and goes up every 20 to 30 seconds, like a wave-roll, up and down!
the computer sitting on the other room disconnects regularly every few minutes, and you can see the signal fading slowly until disconnection, and then after a few seconds (10-30) it connects again!

Bought a better (N type) adapter for the long-ranged PC with a +5db-i antenna on top and a 100mW RF power output, the signal was better but fading is equal and disconnection is every less time, but happens many times a day!

The equipment came with a little detachable +2 dB-i antenna, opposite as in manuals stated a +5 dbi one, sellers says it comes this way!

Warranty is 3 years but the warrant service here has no idea and is rarely reachable on phone, and over 30 miles from my office, so going there to see if they are on duty, is not an option!

D-link warranty lacks a lot here in Argentina!

Has anybody any clue on what happens?

Andy

I have a similar problem.  Every time I log in to the router it takes 30secs or more for each page request.  However all other browsing is fast and pleasant. Occasionally it gets confused and disconnecting the power for 20 secs fixes it.

When new it login was fast, but suddenly got slow a few months ago and has never recovered.  I have tried resetting and powering down - no use!

Version is Bx, Firmware 2.03 (never upgraded the firmware).
My PC connected by cable, other wireless connections are smartphone and 2nd PC,  Nothing changed here.
Using Windows 7 Pro.
Problem is the same in Firefox and Explorer.

What region are you located?

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?

If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.
Double NAT
To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged.
If the modem can't be bridged then see if the modem has a DMZ option and input the IP address the router gets from the modem and put that into the modems DMZ.

Some things to try:
Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking.

Link>Wireless Installation Considerations
What wireless modes are you using? Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N?
Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
Try setting a manual channel to a open or unused channel.
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto.
What wireless devices do you have connected?
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Use InSSIDer to find out. How many?
Turn off WISH, and WPS under Advanced.
Try turning off Short GI, WLAN Partition, and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Cat6 is recommended.

I've been experiencing exactly the same problem. It happens only at certain periods though, not always. When it's "good" period, I manage to max out my internet connection (14 mbps straight line) via wireless and at the same time the router's web interface is perfectly responsive. But when it's the "bad" period, I cannot get more than 5-6 mbps and while I'm downloading, the web interface crawls as if it's located on some remote island.

Recently I noticed that during this "bad" period (which could last from 1 hour to more than a day) the wireless speed which the router shows in "Status - Wireless" is 18 mbps or 24 mpbs. I think this explains but why the hell the router falls back to this low connection speed in the first place? What causes it? And why it's only sometimes and when it's fine, it's fine?

I've tried with a few firmwares - from the stock 2.10 to the newest one 2.16 and it's always the same. The router is rev. B5. No funny settings or anything unusual whatsoever.

Yesterday I tried it on cable and it immediately gave me a straight line, so the problem is only via wireless. There are no devices nearby which could cause interference or anything suspicious. I really don't know what to do.

Does anyone has any ideas?

Links>Wireless Installation Considerations and Managing Signal Congestion
Ensure the default (dlink) SSID name is changed. Can be anything and not something thats already in use by any neighboring WiFi routers. Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
What wireless modes are you using?
2.4Ghz Routers only: Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N?
Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
Try setting a manual channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear.
