ipV4 vs. ipV6 implementation for Remote Access and VPN
« on: May 16, 2013, 04:52:18 PM »

I currently have ipV4 as the setting on my DIR-825.   Other posts seem to want ipV6 which is more secure but is not possible with a DIR-825 Rev A1.

I have two routers, a primary router (DIR-825 Rev B1) capable of ipV6 and a secondary router (DIR-825 Rev A1).  If I implement ipV6 on the Rev B1 router but keep ipV4 on the secondary router, will this improve the security, or will it just mess things up so nothing works?

Certain devices (cell phones and most Tablets) don't deal with ipV6 very well at all.   The ones I have tested flat don't connect to the wireless network if the router is set at ipV6.   Is this the experience of others?

Is ipV4 adequate for a Home/Small Business Network when trying to implement Remote Access and VPN?

Eventhough Rev B will do IPv6 and run it if it's enabled, IPv4 is still enabled as well while IPv6 is running. I would think if you turned the Rev A from a router into an AP, that the Rev A AP would communicated with out any problems with the Rev B, however I presume that any IPv6 data traffic will probably not pass thru the Rev A running in AP mode or router mode.

My DIR-825 Rev B1 reset to the factory defaults the other day so I decided to upgrade to the FW Ver. 2.09NA that allows current dates since I had to reprogram it anyway.   The FW update went without a problem and did as advertized.

Since I was resetting the router, I was trying to include reasonable security protocols for the network to allow me to implement VPN and remote access protocols for the network.   I turned on the IPv6 feature.   When I did this, the workstations in the workgroup could no longer access either the shared drives on the server, or the shared drives on the other workstations.  This was true for both the wireless signal and the ethernet.   When I switched the workstations to connect wirelessly to another DIR-825 Rev A1 using IPv4 protocols, the workstations could find the shared drives on the server and the other workstations.   All the workstations and the server are running Windows 7 Professional 64-bit.

Is this normal?  I knew that most cell phones and tablets don't work with IPv6.  I thought that these workstations with all the latest updates and drivers would not have any problems with IPv6.

Are there other features in the router setup that might have caused these sharing failures?   I enabled set TCIP addresses for all the workstations.
