Burned out LAN ports on DIR-825 Router
« on: May 19, 2013, 11:14:48 AM »

I have a DIR-825 Rev B1 as the router on my Home/Small Business Network.  I just upgraded the FW to Ver. 2.09NA and set manual settings to get the best wireless transfer speeds.

Last night while I was transferring data between workstations and the server storage using CAT6E ethernet cables, the network went down.  After much work to figure out what the problem was, I was able to trace this to a failure  of the DIR-825 LAN ports (which also killed the WAN connection).  My setup is as follows:
Modem: DCM-202 Dlink cable modem - older and very reliable and stable.
   l
WiFi Router: Primary DIR-825 Rev. B1  FW ver. 2.09NA  with TP-Link 8db High Gain Antennas
   l
Switch: DLink GO-SW-5GE 5-port, unmanaged, gigabit, smart switch
   l l l l l
Server: HP Proliant N54L Microserver
Workstation 1: HP Elitebook 8460p
Workstation 2: HP Probook 4525s
Workstation 3: HP Elitebook 8440p
AP: DIR-825 Rev. A1 FW ver. 1.13NA

As stated before, all the connections between the modem, router, server, workstations, and AP are at least CAT6.

I tried turning off the routers and modem for a few hours.   I did a hard reset of the router at least 6 times following the 30-30-30 procedure recommended other places.  I even tried using the automatic setup disc to restart the router since I was not able to access the router through the browser.  I am getting a strong signal from the WiFi portion of the router but I cannot route through the router by WIFI.  I plugged a computer directly into the modem and the modem is operating properly.

I reset my DIR-825 Rev. A1 that I was using as an AP and reconfigured it as a Primary router again.  I installed that on the network and everything works exactly as it should.   That is how I can definitively state that the problem is the LAN ports of the DIR-825 Rev B1 router.

I put the DLink 5-port switch in line with the DIR-825 exactly to take the load off the LAN ports on the router.   This Obviously did not help since the LAN ports burned out anyway.

All of the LAN ports are gone because I tried all of the ports and none of them worked.

All of the blue lights for the LAN ports on the front of the router show constant blue.  None blink.

I have the router in the cradle with the LAN ports and antennas sticking straight up.   There is maximum airflow around the router (I don't have a fan blowing on the router) and nothing within a foot of the router.  The router did get warm to the touch.

I would consider my usage of the router to be "normal".  I was doing file transfers from two of the workstations to the server backup for several hours and using the third workstation to do work on the internet.   If the router cannot handle this load, it was not properly designed.

My questions to this forum are:
1. Has anyone else had LAN port failures with their DIR-825 routers?
2. Why was the failure at the LAN port on the router instead of at the 5-port switch?
3. How can I prevent this failure from happening again?  I was foresighted to have a backup router (which I used as an AP) but I don't have a second backup.  This is the first time I stressed the router to the extent that I did this time.  This will be a regular load level in the future.   I am in trouble if I get a second failure like this.
4.This router is less than 4 months old. What is the probability that I can get a free replacement from DLink?
5. If this isn't the proper router for the job, what is?

As an add-on to this; I just did what Fuzzynuts has repeated several times here on this forum - go to backups with ethernet and forget about wireless.  The first time I try to implement this strategy, the router burns out because it can't take the load of 2 workstations doing simultaneous backup with the help of another switch.  That's pathetic.

So far, this forum has not been helpful.

My mistake.  It is actually FurryNutz who has tried to help and reply, not Fuzzynuts.
