DGL-4500 add more than 4 wired lan ports?
« on: July 01, 2009, 05:38:57 PM »

I own the DGL-4500 and would like to be able to use more wired lan ports.  The 4 that it comes with is not enough for me.

Could someone please let me know what my options are?

Thanks

Buy a second router or a switch.
If you get a router, make sure you disable DHCP Server on second router and make sure that it's IP is different then your DGL4500 router (aka set it to 192.168.0.111)
Connect both via one of the LAN ports.

I'm using this configuration with an old SMC 8 ports router.

Thank you!

Should I buy another 4500?
How do I go about making sure I set its IP different than my current 4500?
To where do I plug in the new router?

Don't get another 4500, get a cheap Gigabit switch. Should cost your around $50 for a 4 port.

It's the DGS-2205 5-Port 10/100/1000 Gigabit Unmanaged Switch.  What exactly do they mean by unmanaged?

It means it has no configurations whatsoever, which is perfect for your scenario.

I use NetGear GS108 8 port Gigabit Ethernet switches to extend the capabilities of my home network - everything has Gigabit Ethernet coming to it in my house - laptops (when on wired), desktops, even devices that really don't make use of it, like my networked printers....

My setup is basically the same as yours - one of your existing 4 ports connects to a port on the switch an then you'll have some more ports.  An 8 port may be more economical in terms of expandability, but it i s up to you to decide.
