Has anyone had roaming issues with the DAP2553?
« on: October 03, 2013, 12:05:43 PM »

I have researched this for some time and spoken with Dlink support (still have a ticket open) and I can't seem to get a user to be able to roam seemlessly from one access point to another.  Granted it's a warehouse with steel structures and boxes of tools but I can take an analyzer out there and get signals wherever I go.  I am thinking this has to do with one access point releasing the mac address of the  scanner to the next access point.  Can anyone help me?

I should have added I have version 1.27 firmware, same ssid, different channels - 1,6, 11 (2.4ghz), ap mode.

Link>Welcome!

  • What Hardware version is your DAP? Look at sticker under DAP.
  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the DAPs web page under status.
  • What region are you located?

Wireless Configurations
Links>Wireless Installation Considerations and Managing Signal Congestion
  • Ensure the default (dlink) SSID name is changed. Can be anything and not something thats already in use by any neighboring WiFi routers.
  • What wireless modes are you using?
  • 2.4Ghz Routers only: Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N?
  • Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
  • Try setting a manual Channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear.
  • What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto TPIK and AES.
  • What wireless devices do you have connected?
  • Any cordless house phones?
  • Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many?
  • If you have any of these options, Try turning OFF or ON Short GI, WLAN Partition, HT 20/40 Co-exhistance and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Recommended settings are default. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.
  • Enable WMM Enable Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.
  • Try setting Medium or Low power output settings and test again Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Roaming also depends on the client device hardware ability to automatically find and reconnect to a better signal as well should the current connected signal get to a point where it can't maintain the connection. You'll need to refer to the devices HW Mfr for support and information regarding this.

How many DAPs are being used?

I read this reply before but thanks for replying.  I can't get the hardware version as they are up on the ceiling about 20 feet up.  There are 3 about 50 feet apart.  The scanners I"m using are 802.11g - there is nothing b or n - yet.  I don't have an option for single g - only mixed g and n or mixed g, n, b.  I'm using open authentication with a 64 bit shared key.  I have used several wifi analyzers and we're the only ones  in the area, including inSSIDer.  I have WWM enabled and everyone has their smartphones and a couple tablets but they're connected to the wifi in the office building via WEP.  The DAP2553's have mac address filtering enabled.  We can connect and log in to the local area network, it just drops when you move into the area of the next ap.  I have dropped the power settings to 50% but it hasn't seemed to help.

What are the channels set for on each DAP?
Try setting a manual Channel to 1, 6 and 11 for each DAP.

Try disabling Mac Filtering on the DAPs as a test. If Mac filtering is needed, try using Mac Filters on the main host router.

I can try that but I can't enable mac filtering on the main host because devices come and go and I don't know what those would be.  They allow byod in the office.

thanks for the idea, though, I'll try it.

One test to try is to just temporarily disable all Mac filtering and have someone round around and see if the devices can roam to the other DAP when out of range of the initial one.

Keep us posted.

I have disabled the mac address filtering and oddly ...they are able to roam without being dropped.  The old access points did that with mac address filtering but so much has changed in ten years....They were 802.11a, these are 802.11a/b/g/n.  Also, the new rf guns are mostly set to abg--no n's.  I have downloaded several good apps to monitor ap's in the area and have found some interference at certain points in the warehouse.  I still need to find one that tells me how much overlap I have.

I would like to have better security but it is using a shared key at the moment and I'd rather have them working than secure and having their connection dropped.  They need to be able to transfer items (logged in) from one end of the warehouse to the other without being dropped.

I think you're on to something to go back to the rf gun manufacurer ...Honeywell.  They have default settings for roaming periods and roam trigger dBm's.   This probably needs to be changed.  They originally told me to go with the defaults but maybe our case is different.

Thanks for your help, Furry.

Glad you got something working. Ya, it's possible that WiFi standards have changed over the years and the Client HW isn't keeping up.

I would recommend that if the DAPs have the ability to turn OFF or use just B and G or maybe just single mode G, use that since your HW isn't using any of the other modes. Other then that, you'll be ok for now. Just keep the security going and you'll be ok there.

Enjoy.  ;)
