wifi not working for Mac Book Air after 1.37 update
« on: July 31, 2013, 10:58:43 AM »

I'm having difficulty with my router.  First I bought a Samsung Galaxy S4 which forced me to get the 1.37 update.  Since then I'm having problems connecting my mac book air (MBA) (late 2010 model).  I got it to work 2 days ago, but for no reason it stopped working for my MBA.  I have two DLink 655's.

This is what I changed then to get it to work:
802.11 Mode from "802.11n, 802.11g and 802.11b" to "802.11n and 802.11g"
Enable Auto Channel Scan unchecked
Wireless Channel one of them 6 and the other 12 (12 being the router I couldn't connect with)
Channel Width Auto 20/40 Mhz

I've since changed the following to get it to work today.  Different wireless channels again, and changed the WPA mode to WPA2 with AES.

I guess that it will probably mess up again in a few days... I'm wondering whats going on and what I can do to fix it?

Link>Welcome!
  • What region are you located?
  • Was a Factory Reset performed before and after firmware updates?
  • Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
  • Try setting a manual Channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear.
  • Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto TPIK and AES.
  • Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many?
  • If you have any of these options, Try turning OFF or ON Short GI, WLAN Partition, HT 20/40 Co-exhistance and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Recommended settings are default. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.
  • Enable WMM Enable Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

I got it working again with everything, however yet again my MBA suddenly decided to not work on its wifi.  It connects to wifi but not the internet.

1) I'm located in Western Europe.
2) I didn't do a factory update before or after the firmware update.
3) I have 20Mhz set on both routers just now.
4) I set one router to 1 and the other router to 6.
5) I've WPA-Personal, with WPA mode being WPA2 only and Cipher type AES on both routers.
6) There are 6 SSIDS in the area.  2 of them are my DIR-655 and one of them is my printer's one.
7) I've now turned off Short GI (as it was on).  WLAN Partition is now on, "HT 20/40 Co-exhistance" - I'm not sure what this is...  I've also turned off extra wireless protection.
8) WMM enable was already enabled.

I then rebooted the system and tried to connect using my mac book.  It worked.  I'll report back here when it decides not to work again in 2 days time.

I have DIR-655 Hardware version A3, Firmware 1.37NA (connected to my ISP and is wifi hotspot also)
And
DIR-655 Hardware version A4, Firmware 1.37NA. (used as a wifi hotspot only)

Also try with WLAN Partition OFF.
What OSX version are you using on the Mac Book?

I'm running OS X, 10.6.8.

So this morning I wake and try my laptop and its not working.  It connects to the downstairs router which is the access point one.  However I cannot get online.  This router is connected by wire to the upstairs router which in turn is connected to the ISP's router.

I've turned WLAN Partition off now.  Then had to restart both routers.  Waited for the gateway to measure network connection and re-tried my laptop's access to the internet.  That worked.  Lets see how long it will stay on for.

Thanks for your help FurryNutz.

Ok, I've used OSX 10.6 thru 10.8 with my Mac Book Pro however I don't have a Rev A DIR-655, mines a Rev B.

Keep us posted...

Maybe someone can review your router settings with you using Link> teamviewer if your interested. Its safe and secure.

I gave up in the end.  I still can connect with everything except my MBA.  There may be issues with using 2 routers.  When I connect to my Dlink 655 I can see the router page, however it will not connect to the internet.  Unlike my other wireless devices which can see the router page and have access to the internet.

Is the MBA getting DNS addresse(s) under networking? If it's not then it's not getting proper DNS configuration from the MAIN host router. Can the MBA connect to the main host router and get internet there?
