System questions?
« on: June 12, 2013, 01:19:35 PM »

I was considering purchasing a camera or 2 for home security and came across this product. I'm trying to find some information on how this all works but can't seem to find answers to simple questions. I have found I can use my home wireless and sync these up to some sort of account I'd create with mydlink to view via the web and mobile devices and thats all well and good but I haven't been able to find a yes or no answer to whether or not I can record video. Its not much good to me if I can't.  If so how much? Does it record to my PC or somehow upload to this mydlink account. Does this account cost money like a monthly fee? If so how much. I tried calling their 800 number and got put into one que after another until I ended up at a message to leave my number for a call back. I was hoping someone here could help me out.

Thanks

The DCS-942L contains an on-board SD Card slot and can record video directly to the card.

Are there any specs saying how much it holds. And this mydlink account is there a monthly fee?

the stored video capacity is dependent upon the size of the SD card and resolution of the video you're saving, so it all depends...

The mydlink service is free. The desktop PC web access is free, as is the mydlink Lite android/iPhone smart phone apps. The tablet version (mydlink+ has a one time fee to purchase the app).

So it comes with a SDcard slot but not an SD card? Is there any way using this system of storing video to a local PC hard drive instead of the SD card?

No SD card is included.

Yes, D-Link offers D-ViewCam, a desktop software product that will enable you to record video directly to your desktop. You may want to look at one of the next generation cameras, such as the DCS-933L which has additional functionality and corrects issues with some of the older generation products. The DCS-933L does everything as the DCS-942L (and more), but does not have an SD Card slot.

There are also third party software products that can achieve similar results.

I recommend visiting the D-Link website and downloading the DCS-933L user manual so you can learn more about the camera before making your decision. Below is a link to the DCS-932L web UI emulator, to give you an idea as to how the camera works. The DCS-933L web UI is similarly structured, but contains more features: DCS-932L - Web UI Emulator

Visit the D-ViewCam board on this forum: D-ViewCam. There is a sticky post at the head of the board titled "D-ViewCam v3.50 + Device Pack v1.4.10 - Comments & Observations", which contains links to the most recent release and manual.
