Blank DHCP Reservations and Slow/Stuck Router?
« on: June 23, 2013, 11:33:52 AM »

It seems that my DIR-655 has run pretty smoothly over the past few years. Recently it's been giving me trouble, and my network setup knowledge is limited to on-the-fly learning, so bear with me here. If the answer's been posted elsewhere forgive me as I did do a search several ways with no luck.

Basically, my internet and LAN traffic has been spotty- sometimes working wonderfully, sometimes not. I wonder if it has something to do with noticing that the router is assigning IP addresses to blank locations (where what appears to be the MAC addresses of my known devices are shown, I see 00:00:00:00:00 shown). The time for expiration for each of these appears to be "Never" even though I haven't reserved them. I am using DHCP server from the router. Is this normal behavior for this router?

I've restarted the router, checked all my configuration settings, and I think things are set as they should. I've done a complete reset to factory defaults and gone through the setup process again, with the same issues where it works great, then spotty again. I am running the latest firmware, I have roughly 20-25 devices through the home that access the router either wireless or through LAN. I have gone through and manually revoked all the blank IP reservations, and then shortly thereafter I see them popping back up, in what appears to be random order, until pretty much any unused IP address gets taken with one of these "ghost" reservations.

Thanks for the link. I went through every point on there, and here's a summary below. Basically, the problem seems to be the internet connection AND the LAN connectivity intermittently going out, and coming back on sporadically. My main question is: Is it normal for a router to reserve IP addresses to blank MAC addresses?

I'm using hardware version A. I have the latest firmware. Problem existed before and after firmware updates and system reboots and factory resets. I am in Illinois. I use Comcast cable modem. The router and modem are bridged properly MTU is 1500 and correct. QoS is disabled, as is traffic shaping. I used auto setup for internet and wifi, only changing the SSID name and a manual passkey. All devices are set to auto IP, and no other DHCP servers exist on my network. IPv6 is not an option. No firewalls are on the network. All devices are either Macs or internet-capable media devices. Current time and date are set. I do have corded house phones. I am not having particular wifi issues. I am using WPA/WPA2 Personal with Auto TPIK and AES.

Can you identify the devices on the routers status page and Networking Page and let us know what they are that seem to be getting these blank MAC addresses? Are the devices working when this happens?

I recommend that you have your ISP check the signal going into the Cable modem. Remove any TV line splitters as these can reduce signal and cause noise on the line.
What model Cable modem do you have?

I am NOT able to identify the devices that are getting blank MAC addresses. I am able to identify every device that I own on the network, and each is getting a proper IP address assigned to it. My router is configured to assign IP addresses from 192.168.0.100 through 192.168.0.199. My actual devices are assigned addresses scattered through that range. But the longer the router goes between resets, the more IP addresses are assigned to blank MAC addresses. If it has been a while between resets, then most, if not all, IP addresses in the assignable range that are not in use by actual devices on my network are assigned to blank MAC addresses, and are set to expire "Never"  This is the core of my questions: Is this normal behavior for a router???

The cable modem is supplied by Comcast- I'm thinking Motorola, but I'll check later. The cable people have been out and checked the ISP signal recently, and I've learned how to check it myself. All seems okay there.

Ensure your the only person with access to the routers management page. It's not normal behavior to see blank addresses.

I would do a factory reset, disconnect the cable going to the ISP modem. Turn OFF ALL devices, accept for the wired LAN PC. Log in and configure the router from scratch. Save and reserve the PC address. Give names to so you know what they are. Save settings and reboot. Turn ON the next device, reserve, save settings. Graduate doing this for all devices.

I'm the only one with access to the router. Thanks for the reply to say that it is not normal behavior.

I did what you said. I turned on devices sequentially and reserved addresses. Still doing blank DHCP reservations.

Fixed the problem by uplugging the DIR-655, waiting for Amazon to deliver an A*us router, plugged that in, and everything works great now. Thanks!

You can use the 655 as a wired AP if needed.

Good Luck and enjoy.
