I normally only have the DNS323 accessed by one machine running Win XP. Today I was doing date transfers - coping several thousand files to it and then having another workstation [with Win7] copying those files to its local drives using SyncBackPro. Right now, that process is finished, but it's sitting flashing its lights and the drive is making noise.  Is there possibly some long delay while the raid duplicates all the changed data?

I got impatient and did a disk tools->Scan disk - it ran very quickly - maybe 20 seconds - went to 100% and indicated failed.  The disk activity stopped and the lights were not flashing. Rebooted, no disk noise, no lights flashing, but the fan was on 100%. Temperature 114/46.  Powered off and on, and all seemed normal, but disk scan fails again.

It's now been running for 2 hours 100% copying files to a workstation drive - but no sign of failure. Temperature 118/48.

I think the general consensus on that disk tools/scan disk is that it doesn't work - certainly I've never had mine pass, and it's apparently not possible to do such a scan without first dismounting the volume(s)

Weird - I have a DNS321 also and ran a scan on it yesterday - it ran ok but took much longer than I would have thought. Thanks - now I can assume my 323 is fine.

If you want to verify that your drives are good you could turn off the unit, pull the power plug, take one of the drives and put it in a USB/SATA caddy or adapter and use that when you run the manufacturers disk tools utility against that drive.  This should give you all the SMART information.  Pay particular attention to reserve sector usage - if the remaining spare sector count is low or zero be ready to replace the drive but above all make sure you have a valid backup.

With FFP, you can also run SMART tools and access the data easily. I run it nightly and automatically parse the results for any issues and have it notify me by email with anything I need to investigate.
