performance issue on DNS-320
« on: July 17, 2013, 08:29:00 AM »

Last night I used NASTester 1.4 to test my DNS-320 (RAID1 with 2HDD of 2TB). to my supprise, I found the performance was very poor. I am using Gigabye LAN cable to connect to my DNS 320.

My question are:
1. Normally Write takes longer (the slower one of the HDD in RAID1), but why my write speed is much faster than Read?
2. Is my Read speed 7.67 MB/sec normal? I do not think so.

NAS performance tester 1.4 http://www.808.dk/?nastester
Running warmup...
Running a 400MB file write on drive Y: 5 times...
Iteration 1:     20.09 MB/sec
Iteration 2:     18.50 MB/sec
Iteration 3:     19.71 MB/sec
 Iteration 4:     20.30 MB/sec
Iteration 5:     20.06 MB/sec

Average (W):     19.73 MB/sec

Running a 400MB file read on drive Y: 5 times...
Iteration 1:     8.17 MB/sec
 Iteration 2:     7.59 MB/sec
Iteration 3:     7.71 MB/sec
Iteration 4:     7.67 MB/sec
Iteration 5:     7.18 MB/sec

What firmware on the DNS-320?
Is the DNS-320 directly connected to the computer you are running the test from or does it go through a router?
If computer and nas connect through a router does it have GB ports?
Again, if connection is via a router or switch what other activity was there on the network?

As you can see there are several things that can cause problems with speed tests, even on GB lans.  Somewhere on the forum are the results of tests using various firmware levels with the latest firmware being the slowest.

The other thing to consider is, does the test speed really matter?  In other words, do you have problems reading and writing to the nas in day to day activities?  Yes, the read speed is low but there are other factors that may be causing that such as the network card in the computer, even the NIC drivers can cause a problem.

I have seen a case where updated NIC drivers actually slowed down network activity which we regained by restoring the older drivers.

Thanks Ivan for your reply. :)

My DNS-320 NAS's firmware is the latest version 2.03.

I connected to NAS via router (Netgear WNDR3700). My laptop, router and NAS all have gigabite LAN connections. When I ran that performance test, there is no other activity (such as video streaming) on router.

I am not aware any of the performance issue from my daily usage. I was just surprised that the performance result was so bad???

I am also very confused about the read/write speed. I am using RAID1, so I thought that the read speed should be better(or at least the same ) than write speed.

Firmware version 2.03 has a problem with read/write speed and, because of that several people have reverted to version 2.02 and seen a speed increase.

All our DNS-320s are on version 2.01 for the simple reason they do what we want and I'm a firm believer in 'if it isn't broken then don't fix it' method of upgrades.  The only time we upgrade - after extensive tests - is if the firmware has a feature we need.

edit:  I forgot to mention http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=51588.0 which should give you a little extra information.
