What Is With the 5 GHz Radio?
« on: July 09, 2013, 12:09:37 PM »

After 2 weeks of excellent service (except for the lack of an afp daemon in the router) my 5 GHZ radio died.  Like all of the sudden while streaming through my iMac to my Apple TV, nothing.  I powered down and back on, several times.  Nothing.  No radio (signal) detected on the scanner.  The 2.4 GHZ signal actually increased from -51 db to -48 db.  I returned the router for a new one.

Now after 3 weeks the 5 GHz signal has suddenly dropped from a strong -58 db to a weak -88 db.  Noise is at -92 db.  Nothing changed.  No firmware upgrade.  No moving of any device.  Just the 5 GHz radio burning itself out! Again  8-(  I need the 5 GHz radio because of the crowd (11) at 2.4 GHz.  The interference is ferocious.

You think maybe 3rd time lucky?  Or does someone recommend another 5 GHz product, D-Link or otherwise?

Any other Wifi near by on 5Ghz?
What channel is it using currently on 5Ghz?
Streaming thru your iMac to your Apple TV? I presume this is WiFi and you using the iMac a media server?

Been using my 826L for the past 2 weeks on 5Ghz for xbox gaming. Been doing well here.

What Firmware version is currently loaded?
---> Originally stock 1.01.  Upgrade to 1.04 had no effect.  Pretty sure its a hardware problem.  But I wonder what is breaking.

Any other Wifi near by on 5Ghz?
---> No.  That is why I got 5 GHz and while it works it works GREAT.  Same net speed as the one wired computer.  (speedtest.net)

What channel is it using currently on 5Ghz?
---> Auto.  But doesn't matter.  When I manually set the channel I still do not see it in the scanner.  (5GHz is now dead, completely! 8-(

Streaming thru your iMac to your Apple TV? I presume this is WiFi and you [are] using the iMac [as] a media server?
---> Yes.  AirPlay Mirroring.  Should not affect life span of the 5 GHz radio, should it?

Been using my 826L for the past 2 weeks on 5Ghz for xbox gaming. Been doing well here.
---> Good to hear.  Let's see if you get past 3-4 weeks.  That seems to be the life span of the 5GHz radio.  As I said, the first worked also only about 2-3 weeks.

Since you seem to know the D-Link product mix like the back of your hand, any other 5GHz wireless routers you would recommend?  Or do I have to spend hours researching on my own?

Any chance you can take this router to a different location with different devices, say a friend for familys place just to see if the problem follows and test with different devices.

Can you set a manual channel 36 and see the radio at all?

I would not expect to see any failures using Apple products with this router. I have had my 826L for several months now. I'd have to go back and look to see when i got it exactly however both radios have been working well since I got it accept for the one issue on 5Ghz when I upgraded to v1.03 which i'm still wondering about. I have loaded v1.04 on it again and everything has been ok so far. D-Link is still sending me another 826L as they mentioned that there could be an HW issue when v1.03 was applied. They could not reproduce it there on there HW. I currently have a bridged DIR-865L and a DAP-1533 connected to the 5Ghz radio for 2 xboxes for gaming. Been working this radio pretty good.

I still feel this is an isolated issue possibly and the reason to see if you can take this unit to a different local, however if the 5Ghz is actually broke and not functional, then I wonder if your Apple devices could also be contributing to it's demise. I use a Mac Book Pro 2007 era on mine however I don't stream much thru it. I do that wired with a LAN file server. I just remembered that my roommate downstairs does streaming on his xbox over the 5ghz radio on one of the wireless adapters so it does get used for some video streaming.  ::)

One other test you could try, you'll need to switch to 2.4Ghz, lower the power output of the radio from High to say Medium or try Low. Disable HT 20/40Mhz Co-existance option as well. Then attempt to stream with the Apple devices on 2.4Ghz. I'm wondering if there could be any failures here.

This is 2 same model routers that exhibited the same failure on 5Ghz with your devices. I presume there is a possible relation somewhere to the failure.

I have enjoyed my 826L for what it does and would recommended it being that this could be an isolated issue I think here. If your looking to remain with 5Ghz, you might try the 857, 827, 835, 868L, 855L or 836L. I do have the 857, 827 and 868L and all are very nice.

I'm going to pass this along to D-Link and see if we can get some review on this and some additional help.

OC-Carl returned the 826L directly to D-Link USA for review and inspection, and was upgraded a DIR-850L.

This issue is closed.
