Swap drive position

Can I pull out both drives and insert each into the other bay, put drive in bay 1 into bay 2 and nay 2 into bay 1?  Will the pulling and reinserting cause the DNS to want to reformat or is it just that simple?

drive mapping.
Currently have 1TB (bay 1) 640GB (bay 2)
Going to upgrade drive size, so transfer 640GB data to PC (ftp) , pull out 640GB slide in new 2TB, copy 1TB (bay 1) data to the 2TB drive (bay 2),  copy transfered data back to 1TB (bay 1)
Bay 1 mapped as Movies Bay 2 mapped as TV shows...I suppose I could just remap.

The best course is to remap the devices accessing your DNS-320. Although you can move the 1TB HDD, doing so will create more complexity and opportunities for things to go wrong.

  • Copy data in Slot-2 (640GB HDD) to PC
  • Remove Slot-2 640GB HDD and Add 2TB HDD
  • Copy data from Slot-1 (1TB HDD) to Slot-2 (2TB HDD)
  • Copy data from PC to Slot-1 (1TB HDD)

but technically one should be able to pull out drive and reinsert without DNS doing something funky correct?

The only strange thing your proposal would create is two Volume_1 or Volume_2.  The volume name is hard wired to the slot.

While this may not be a disaster it could cause some 'interesting' results when you try mapping the drives.

I transferred files from 640GB (bay 2, volume 2) to PC. 
Popped 2TB into Bay 2, logged in started process and it hung up on "formatting new volume".  Pulled out 1TB from bay 1, put in 2TB only (read this on forum, somebody else having same issue).... drive not recognized.  Pulled out 2 TB, popped it into PC, reformatted it, put it back in alone, formatted it and it was formatted as Volume 1.  Put back in the 1TB and it became volume 2.  Used internal backup to transfer files from volume 2 (originally volume 1) to the 2TB which is now called volume 1.  Erased files and transferred back files from 640GB to the volume 2 1TB...so everything worked not as expected but ended up being exactly what I wanted.
