Xbox360 slow to access DNS-323
« on: April 07, 2009, 07:59:52 AM »

Hi everyone,

My xbox360 is extremely slow to access my DNS-323 when browsing and playing video and music folders.  When accessing the DNS-323 via my PC, everything is very speedy and seems to work fine.  Is this an issue with the xbox or are there any settings that I could be changing on the xbox, in my router (DIR-655) or in the DNS-323?

Thanks for any help!

It's the Xbox 360, unfortunately.  Accessing the DNS-323 via my computer or via XBMC running on my old Xbox was always quick, even more so when I stopped using the built-in UPnP server and installed Twonky.  But the 360 has always been slow to access on either UPnP server.

Brutal.  Besides that, the NAS works well for me.  The only other thing is that the BitTorrent interface can be slow at times.  Otherwise I love the DNS-323.

I have been unable to stream to my xBox from network drives (NAS) , It only works for me on Local PC drives. Please tell me how make the xbox play DNS-323 files.

1st... does the Xbox360 "sees" the DNS-323 in the "Video Library"

If NOT:
I would recommend doing a backup of you data before proceding
upgrade the DNS to v1.07 (or v1.06)
after the upgrade, hold the reset switch behind the DNS for about 30 second
This should reset the settings to default... (this will not delete/change data in the hard drives)
Create an empty folder in the root of the DNS
Go to the web interface of the DNS, activate the UPnP service
and select that empty folder you just created for the UPnP path
Save the settings.

Put 1 video file in that empty folder
back to the web interface, click on the "Refresh" button, wait till it goes to 100%

Your Xbox360 should now see the DNS-323 and video you added.

If you xbox360 DOES see the DNS-323 and the video files, but its to slow to stream (choppy video)
then it could be an issue with your network... in that case we need more info
Are you connecting the xbox via wireless?
how far away are you from the access point?
how many wireless client do you have connected at the same time...
what kind of router do you have.....

I did the exact thing as above and it worked fine by creating a folder called "Media" in the root drive.

Then I moved all my other videos into the directory which also worked fine.

Then I movied my MP3s and Pictures directories into the same "Media" directory but the 360 failed to see the pictures or MP3s.

Can someone help out?

Thanks

Watch out for files or folders with special characters such as "&" if one of your files in the folder has this symbol the xbox will see no files in the folder. This is one issue seen alot just try to keep them simple also the less complicated the folder structure it the better.
