wireless router pre-sales question
« on: May 20, 2009, 09:59:24 AM »

hi,

i'm about at the end of my rope with Linksys and there lack of development for their products. as such i need to replace my wrt600n unit with something else, and i wanted to see what current users would recommend me looking into / purchasing.

must haves:
wpa2-psk & wpa-tkip
mac address filtering
embedded 4 port fastE switch
stable
current platform that D-Link will be developing on, or fully functional 3rd party firmware exists
wireless g
AP only
ability to pair with linksys wet200 bridge
ability to assign manual dhcp reservations

nice to haves:
wireless n
embedded 4 port gigE switch
fully functional syslog
jumbo frame support
qos
under $100
energy star qualified
AP+router

please fire away with any/all suggestions, and thanks in advance.

I have been a Linksys guy since late 90's.  The DIR-825 i love.  The current revision is closed-sourced firmware but still, does almost everything I need it to.  I have used IPCOP as a firmware on a P4 system and found DIR-825 kept up.  I'm not running a large setup, but I'm happy.

I wouldn't recommend a router other than the WRT54G v3.1 in those days.  ROCK SOLID with DD-WRT and just the sweetest combo a guy could do.  Every since Linksys meet 802.11n, there rep in my book has been horrible.  Right up there with Symantec.  So, bought the DIR-825, plugged in a few USB devices, everything works and firmware(s) updates are good.

I made a few compromises of going to DIR-825 from IPCOP & DD-WRT, but a solid 2.4 & 5 ghz "N" is what I wanted.

Hardware revision B1 will open the firmware up, but no clue when yet.  Can't wait.

Nice to see you over at the D-Link forums drick.  I use to have only Linksys products but have switch all of my equipment over to D-Link.

I finally got tired of Linksys moping around with fixing critical issues with the WRT-610N (constant drops and disconnects).  I've had the DIR-825 for ~4-5 months now and have to say hands down there's no comparision.  The DIR-825 is the clear winner.  It's rock solid and I've never had a problem with the router.

In terms of the WET-200, I never had a problem with the bridge when I was using it with my A/V equipment but I eventually upgraded to the D-Link DAP-1522 for the Wireless-N 2.5/5 GHz and gig ports.  However, when I moved the WET-200 to my networked HP printer I had nothing but problems with the bridge losing a connection after several hours.  The only recourse was to reboot the bridge.  Hence, I finally retired the WET-200 and replaced it with a second DAP-1522.  I've had no problems since then.

The current version of the DIR-825 is rev A1 however as memphis has stated a rev B1 is in the works.  Rev B is suppose to be an open source firmware and once the new version is released the older version will be phased out.

You can find a D-link reference to rev B via the following link:

http://support.dlink.com/products/revision.asp

You can also find the B1 version mentioned in this forum.  Here are a few links that talk about the upcoming version:

B1 release?
DIR-825 H/W Revision: B1
Rev. B1 ... open source software ?

Edit: I currently have H/W version A1.

hey rdolak, looks like we are both about to be ex linksys guys! :) i spend a lot of time here since i picked up on their soho nas products which are friggin AWESOME!

your advice on the wet200 was good BTW. the WET200 seems to work as advertised, although perhaps does have some performance glitches when gaming. i could never determine whether it was the wrt or the wet causing it though.

i tried that 1st link which redirected me here: http://support.dlink.com/products/view.asp?productid=

which then gave me this error:

ADODB.Field error '800a0bcd'

Either BOF or EOF is True, or the current record has been deleted. Requested operation requires a current record.

/products/view.asp, line 22
--

i did however jump in on the other 2 posts, thanks for pointing them out. doesn't look like there is any clear ETA on when the b1 code will be released?

good to hear from you, hope things are well

Sorry about that ... if you try this link and select the DIR-825 you should get to the page I was trying to link to.

http://support.dlink.com/downloads/

EDIT: This link may take you directly there,

i actually took your advice and picked up the 825 today (a1 hw rev, they didn't have the b1).

already have it set up and installed for the most part. i just need to add mac address filtering and the manual dhcp reservations that you showed me how to do on the LS.

so far so good, and it's definitely faster than the wrt600n.

Ex-Linksys guy as well!  The first one with a solid open-source firmware and features that surpass the competitor gets my money usually.

I was copying some DVDs wireless to my Intel 5100 N notebook, Just under 10MB's a second!  HUGE improvements... almost better than 10/100 WIRED!
