DIR 655 B1 US FW 2.11NA keeps restarting about every hour
« on: November 03, 2013, 05:20:02 AM »

I originally had my router on FW 2.07, but it started acting funny, like shutting out some devices from receiving internet or LAN connectivity. Decided to factory restore and update while I was at it. Did a factory restore, updated, and restored again, and set up the router manually. It worked beautifully at first. My ping tests were yielding the fastest results I've ever seen and other issues I had with 2.07, like UPnP not being available for devices, were solved. But after an hour of regular use, the router rebooted on it's own, and continued to do it every hour since the upgrade.

My physical setup around the router, such as cordless phones and other electronics placement is the same as before the upgrade when I didn't have these problems.

The setting on the router are all default setting except:
-Setup>Internet>Manual Internet Connection Setup> Enable advances DNS service disabled and ISP's (Comcast) DNS serves set.
-Advanced>QoS Engine> Traffic shaping disabled
-Advanced>Advanced Wireless> Short GI disabled

I've noticed the router doesn't reboot overnight while I have no wireless devices connected, so I guess that means there is something that the connected devices are doing that's causing it to reboot, but you're guess is as good as mine.

Anybody else having this problem or know of a fix?

Link>Welcome!

  • What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
  • Are you wired or wireless connected to the router?
  • Has a Factory Reset been performed?
  • Was a Factory Reset performed before and after any firmware updates then set up from scratch?

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
  • What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
  • What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?
  • What ISP Modem service link speeds UP and Down do you have?
  • Check ISP MTU requirements, Cable is usually 1500, DSL is around 1492 down to 1472. Call the ISP and ask. Link>Checking MTU Values
  • For DSL/PPPoE connections on the router, ensure that "Always ON" option is enabled.

Router and Wired Configurations
Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1. Use IE, Opera or FF to manage the router.
  • Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options, Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
  • Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual or under Setup/PARENTAL CONTROL/Set to>None: Static IP or Obtain Automatically From ISP.
  • Enable Use Unicasting (compatibility for some ISP DHCP Servers) under Setup/Internet/Manual.
  • Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking. Link>Finding Faster DNS Addresses using Name Bench
  • Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking. This ensures each devices gets its own IP address when turned on and connected, eliminates IP address conflicts and helps in troubleshooting.
  • Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
  • If IPv6 is an option on the router, select Local Connection Only or Disable IPv6 options under Setup/IPv6.
  • Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall. Enable or Disable SPI to test.
  • Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking. Disable uPnP for testing Port Forwarding rules. Enable IPv6 Multi-cast Streaming for routers that have a Media Server option. Disable IPv6 Multi-cast Streaming if IPv6 or Media Server is not being used.
  • Turn off WISH, and WPS under Advanced.
  • WAN Port Speed set to Auto or specific speed? Some newer ISP modems support 1000Mb so manually setting to Gb speeds can be supported by the router. Advanced/Advanced Networking/WAN Port Speed
  • Set current Time Zone, Date and Time. Use an NTP Server feature. Tools/Time.
  • Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Link> Cat6 is recommended.

Wireless Configurations
Links>Wireless Installation Considerations and Managing Signal Congestion
  • Ensure the default (dlink) SSID name is changed. Can be anything and not something thats already in use by any neighboring WiFi routers. Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
  • What wireless modes are you using?
  • 2.4Ghz Routers only: Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N?
  • Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
  • Try setting a manual Channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear.
  • What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto TPIK and AES.
  • What wireless devices do you have connected?
  • Any cordless house phones?
  • Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many?
  • If you have any of these options, Try turning OFF or ON Short GI, WLAN Partition, HT 20/40 Co-exhistance and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Recommended settings are default. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.
  • Enable WMM Enable Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.
  • Try setting Medium or Low power output settings and test again Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

3rd Party Security Software Configurations
  • Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
  • Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

Router Placement
Forum User - "Well I feel really dumb. After moving the router away from other electronic devices my speeds are back to normal. Just a heads up for anyone experiencing slow speeds, you might want to move it away from other electronics and see if that helps."
6" minimum safe distance between devices.

-Hardware Version: B1
-I have 2 wired windows computers and multiple wireless clients, but I only configure the router through my wired connections.
-Factory reset has been tried.
-Factory reset was done before updating, then again afterwards, then I set it up from scratch.

-ISP is Comcast, Cable connection.
-Ubee Manufacturer, Model DVM3203B
-MTU is 1500, as I set in the router.

-QoS: Disabled
-Advanced DNS: Disabled
-Unicasting: Enabled
-DNS Relay: Enabled
-Have not tried DHCP Reservations yet. Will try that now.
-TCP and UDP: Both Endpoint independent.
-UPnP Enabled. Multicast Streaming Enabled.
-WISH: Disabled
-Tried disabling WPS but router wouldn't let anything at all connect when I did.
-Time setting set correctly
-Cat5e cable set between modem and router, can't really get my hands on a CAT6, and its always been working fine with the current cable.

-I have an original SSID set.
-Using Mixed B,G, and N mode. Tried all combinations of mixes and with 20/40 Mhz.
-Tried Manual Ch. 1, 6, and 11 also.
-For now, security is Auto(WPA/WPA2 Mix) and cipher is TKIP and AES mix, but I had it set to WPA2 with AES only earlier and the problem still happened.
-Cordless Phone, yes, 6 feet away, but it's always been there without causing issues, but I will try moving it.
-I have a 2 Win7 laptops, Wireless. PS3 Slim, Wireless. 2 Galaxy S 3's, Wireless. 2 iPod touches, Wireless. WinXP Desktop, Wired. Win8 Desktop, Wired.
-I'll try InSSIDer to troubleshoot when I get the chance.
-Short GI has been tried On and Off.
-WMM: Enabled.

Set DHCP Reservations for literally every one of my devices that will be connecting to my router and set them all to auto obtain IP adresses. :o So far I've gone one hour and eight minutes without a connection loss. :D That's pretty much the longest it's ever gone while under regular use. Lets home it stays up.

It stayed up all night for me to finish my work and I went to bed with it running, but I just woke up and checked the Connection Up Time on the status page and it apparently rebooted again 50 minutes ago. It lasted a bit longer with DHCP reservation, but the problems still there :-\

What frequency is the cordless phone running? What is the distance between the phone and the router?

  • Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many?

One test you can do, before you go to bed, turn OFF the WiFi radio on the router. Come back the next morning and check UP time...need to see if the WiFi or with out is rebooting any.

The phone's base says 2.4, I don't know what channel exactly that it's running on and there's no way in the setting to select a channel for it to operate on. The Distance between the router and phone base is a bit over 6 feet.

Used InSSIDer and it tells me I have 6 other networks in my area but I have the only one operating on channel 6, but there are 2 overlapping networks.

I'm about to go to the gym now so I should be gone about 2-3 hours. I'll turn off the WiFi while I'm out and see how that effects it.

Move that 2.4Ghz phone away from the router as far a possible. This could be causing reboots. I saw the same thing on my DGL-4500 years ago with my cordless phone with in 4 feet of the router.

Keep us posted.

I had the WiFi completely disabled but it still rebooted ten minutes ago, so I guess the problem isn't likely related to the wireless. Should I still try moving the phone base just to be sure?  Anything else that could be causing it?

News: 21 hours and no restart. WiFi is active and setting are all on defaults for 2.11 factory restore.
I am facing issues though. Some pages don't load and on others, certain elements won't load. Like on the page where I'm typing this now, the emoticons are just showing as the default thumbnail that appears when an icon can't load (That thing that looks like a paper with a mountain in the background.)

What I did to this time was unplug my WinXP desktop wired pc from the router. My guess is it was causing an IP conflict because I think it may be set up with a manual IP.

I will factory restore again and keep the XP machine disconnected to see if it continues operating correctly. Then I'll try setting the XP to auto obtain IP and reconnect it and see if that clears all issues.
