320L and Internet access
« on: November 18, 2013, 01:50:46 PM »

Hi all – I've been using my shiny new 320L and I'm very happy.
I'd like to set up my children as "users" so they can access the NAS. I know how to set them up in the NAS GUI, give them read access etc etc.

I also have organised with ISP Static IP address.

I have a Billion BiPAC 7800N Router / Modem.

Should I do this ? (ie open the NAS to the internet ) and how do I do it ...

I think I understand I have to set up "Remote Access" in the modem.

I wrote this a little later ...
I have had success.
I set port forwarding on the router (Billion 7800N) with these setting:

Application   Protocol-FTP
External Port-TCP
Internal IP Address-192.168.1.51
Internal Port-21
Time Schedule-Always On

This has worked, I can access the NAS via a friends ADSL and via telstra mobile. I have found the best approach is via FTP client such as filezilla, rather than through the NAS's GUI.

I have set up accounts and passwords for the family and created a share folder they have R/W access to. They will advise me what they want and I'll copy the files for them.

Any thoughts ? Am I on the right track, or doing anything dangerous?

Thanks!

Thanks for that. I will only put copies of shows as they request them. The children can delete them, that's fine. The share has a password. I was just checking that it was safe.
