Run website from DNS-321?
« on: May 21, 2009, 09:26:58 AM »

Is this possible? I feel dumb as a bag o' diapers, asking the question -after- "shooting first" and purchasing a custom DNS service and domain registration on DynDNS (having read about the DDNS capabilities/features on the DNS-321 TOOLS configuration page).

Do I have to run a webserver on a PC hooked up to my LAN? I was under the assumption I could just place a website folder/contents on the NAS and the DDNS would expose it to the world.....

Wally @ still stuck in DOS somewhere, apparently....

Thanks, in that thread madpenguin indicates he's running his website right from the DNS-323. So, the short answer is, I suppose, yes, it can be done on the DNS-321 as well (??!!) Now I just have to figure what I have to do...

Turn on the FTP server and "publish" a website to it? Anyone want to give me a clue before my small brain fizzles off into thin air? I at least understand this is wetware problem, nothing to do with Dlink merchandise....

Hmm... the fun_plug package installs Lighttpd. The same way you would turn on "Transmission" or "Ssh" I would suspect you would turn on "Lighttpd". It servers up web pages over port 8080 by default.

Check...

For all sorts of dns-321 hacking goodness.. most dns-323 hacks work on the dns-321.

More to the point install...
http://wiki.dns323.info/howto:fun_plug
on your dns-321

Enable "Lighttpd" and serve away...
:)

Hope this helps.

Thank you, I'm on my way to check that out. I guess this probably voids the warranty but what the hey...
