I've been having issues trying to simply using the port forward on this router.

I'm using a DIR 655 with FW:1.32NA/HW:A4 connected to a Motorola SGB6580.

I've created a static ip beyond the set address DHCP range, set the PF rules with checkbox checked, made an exception in the windows firewall and avast firewall, rebooted the router, and then checked with PF PortChecker. It says it has pinged my router successfully but the port is either not open or unreachable. I then disabled my Avast Firewall and windows temporarily to see if it was the problem and still the same response. I've made sure that I chose a port that isn't being in use with the regular programs I run on a daily basis so right now I'm stuck with a router that can't port forward.

I'm beginning to think it's either the firmware since I've been reading that is has been buggy, or it could be the Motorola modem itself. I know the modem also acts as a router, but since I'm renting from Time Warner I don't have access to it trying the default username/password. I do know that I've had issues on the initial installation of the modem with my router because of the double NAT so I called Time Warner and they disabled the router function itself remotely.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

• What ISP Modem service link speeds UP and Down do you have?
• If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems: Link>Double NAT and How NAT Works. To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged. If the modem can't be bridged then see if the modem has a DMZ option and input the IP address the router gets from the modem and put that into the modems DMZ.

Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1. Use IE, Opera or FF to manage the router.

• Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual or under Setup/PARENTAL CONTROL/Set to>None: Static IP or Obtain Automatically From ISP.
• Enable Use Unicasting (compatibility for some ISP DHCP Servers) under Setup/Internet/Manual.
• Turn off DNS Relay under Setup/Networking. Link>Finding Faster DNS Addresses using Name Bench
• Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking. This ensures each devices gets its own IP address when turned on and connected, eliminates IP address conflicts and helps in troubleshooting.
• Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
• Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall. Enable or Disable SPI to test.
• Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking. Disable uPnP for testing Port Forwarding rules.
• Set current Time Zone, Date and Time. Use an NTP Server feature. Tools/Time.

What ISP Modem service link speeds UP and Down do you have? Time Warner cable, 114 DOWN/6 UP

Modem isn't bridged so I have to contact Time Warner for access to the modem gui.

Or input the IP address the 655 gets from the ISP modem into the modems DMZ.

By placing my IP address that the modem designates for the DIR 655 into the modems DMZ, would that expose my computer to potential security threats?

Yes however thats normal as if any router was directly connected to a stand alone modem, that would also do the same thing. You can enable SPI on the 655 for extra security.

Is the latest FW for DIR 655 stable enough and worth it to upgrade or should I just stick with 1.32NA?

If it works, don't fix it!!! If your not exhibiting any problems, i'd leave it alone.
