Non-network Savvy User Contemplating Upgrade
« on: October 28, 2013, 10:44:45 PM »

I've always subscribed to the if it ain't broke don't fix it motto, but my D-Link DGL-4100 router has quite a few years on it now. To that I have attached a Trendnet TEW-637AP wireless router to provide a wi-fi signal to my Vizio TV, Xbox 360 Elite, a tablet, and my phone while at home. I also have a Vonage box and my secondary networked computer attached to the D-Link via ethernet.

My Xbox plays TV shows and  movies through Netflix without a hitch using the current setup.  The apps on my Vizio TV are un-watchable, but I don't care as long as the Xbox does the job.

It's natural to assume that upgrading to a modern router with built-in wi-fi will increase my performance, but is that really true? I've read that the new ac routers perform better than the standard n routers even if the target device does not support ac. I have no idea if the Xbox 360 elite supports 5 ghz streaming and I don't even know how to set that up. I'll give you all a moment to get up off the floor from laughing.

I see routers like the D-Link 868L for around $100, but what kind of performance dividend will I get from that small investment?

Link>Welcome!

  • What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the routers web page under status.
  • What region are you located?

New things to think about...
5Ghz WiFi.
5Ghz AC WiFi modes.
mydlink.com features for access of USB connected storage.
Flexibility to have client side HW connected on wired LAN, or simultaneous 2.4 and 5Ghz radios.
1000Mb WAN port speed for supported ISP modems that can connect at Gb speeds instead of 100Mb on some older ISP modems. Most newer gen modems use 1000Mb now days.
Future-proof your network system for AC support devices and IPv6 protocols.

You could upgrade xboxes and other devices to use 5Ghz connections:
Bridge Mode vs Relay vs Acess Point (AP) / Routers vs Dedicated Access Points (AP)
Review the 2nd to the last paragraph. The xbox 360 1st gen doesn't have any WiFi. MS came out with a dual band USB WiFi adapter. I have this and it works good. Both 2.4 and 5Ghz. The 2nd gen xbox 260 slim came with only 2.4Ghz built in. Works ok however seen many issues with this WiFi. Not sure of 3rd gen 360 or XB1 will support 5Ghz. I believe the XB1 supports 5Ghz.

I prefer and always recommend gaming or connecting any console on wired LAN if possible. In those cases where you can't, 5ghz Wifi is great if your in 20 feet and line of sight works best. One wooden wall or floor is ok too as 5Ghz is more susceptible to building material and such.

Let us know what you decide to do...Here to help.
