How to enable external srt subtitles with this unit?  ???

The srt/sub files are displayed or played by your media player. As long as your media player is able to detect the files, it should display correct.

After some research: external srt subtitles files are not supported by upnp/dns-327L
[sent a few mails to Dlink, no replay]  :(

I enabled NFS instead of upnp. Works fine now. [A-400]

Perhaps we can add this feature to the wishlist?
