Using outdoor antenna with D-Link DIR-655
« on: December 26, 2013, 01:55:00 PM »

I am helping my (possibly future) father-in-law with his wireless setup at his house.  He runs a business out of a pole shed on his property, so he had the internet installed in the office section of the pole shed.  We are trying to get the wifi signal to his house approximately 150 feet away.  I think the main issue we are having is getting the signal through the metal walls of the pole building, for this reason, I am looking at mounting an external antenna that can plug into the router.  I am looking at an antenna like this

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833164135

Will I have any issues hooking that up to a D-Link DIR-655 by removing one of the three external antennas? Will it have decent speed? They have a slow internet connection because they are in the country (1.5mb) but they have a Google ChromeCast so they will be streaming data between their computer and the ChromeCast via the router in the pole shed.

They were given a router from windstream (their ISP).  I'm not sure the model number, but is a Wireless N but does not have any external antennas.  We can barely pick up a signal on a laptop in the kitchen (closets room to the shop) but the ipad won't pick it up and the ChromeCast in the living room 30 feet from the kitchen won't pick it up.  Is it possible the D-Link DIR-655 alone would be all I need?

Any other tips for me?

You'll need to ensure the external antenna connects to all three connectors on the 655.

One suggestion to review, if this is a line of sight distance between the house and the shed, you might consider going 5Ghz bridges between instead. 5Ghz works best in line of sight and offers a better pipe.

Or any chance of running a LAN wired cable in between?

2.4Ghz might work however streaming could be problematic depending on what is being streamed and having that low of an ISP speed, might not be enough.

Thanks for the reply.  Couple follow up questions:

1. If the external antenna connects to all three antenna jacks on the router and the antenna is outside, will that hurt the wifi signal inside the pole building?

2. If I have the external antenna connected to all 3 jacks, will I need 3 external antennas? Or is there an adapter available to hook one antenna into all 3 jacks? Will using an adapter like that accomplish the objective of hooking into all 3?

Unfortunately, running a LAN wired cable is not an option, we would have to bust up concrete to go under ground and he doesn't want anything strung overhead.

The home is within line of sight, although a large pine tree and a detached garage is between the two buildings.  I'm not familiar with a 5ghz bridge, is that a system that has an antenna on the shop beaming the signal to an antenna on the home that is connected to a seperate router in the house?

I don't think they have much hope of streaming from the internet, the slow ISP speed is killing that.  But they would like to stream a movie pre-downloaded to their computer or ipad to their TV via Google Chromecast.  The ISP speed shouldn't affect that, right?

Can effect internal WiFi inside the building if the antenna is placed out side. Signal should be good if the inside area is small or you place the receiving antennae close to where devices are connecting inside the building

If the single antenna does not have connectors for all 3, then you'll need 3 separate antennae. I do know of one person who did this with a similar router and bought 3 antennae.

Kind of, it would mean placing of one 5Ghz radio or device at one location and a 2nd device at the other location. If there is structures in between then this can effect the signal between. I was hoping there would not be any obstructions in between.

Yes, if you have locally stored files someplace then yes, streaming should work well if you can get the main host Wifi and the remote location WiFi set up well.

Thanks for the reply.

One last question, hopefully.  Could I use their current wireless router/modem for wifi in the shop and then plug a D-Link DIR-655 router via cat5 into that router with the 3 external antennae to get the signal to the house? Would I then bridge the D-Link router?

Or, would it work to use a different router, like the D-Link DIR-601 that has a single antenna and use just one outdoor antenna on the outside of the shop?

Please review this for Bridging:
Bridge Mode vs Relay vs Acess Point (AP) / Routers vs Dedicated Access Points (AP)

You can turn the routers in to APs however it would still need a LAN wire...for those that don't support full Bridge mode.

Thanks FurryNutz

So, based on the link you posted, could I hook a D-Link DIR-2310 to their current modem/router via Cat5 cable, set it right next to the current modem/router and then hook two (maybe even just one) outside antenna to the DIR-2310? Would that allow a good wireless signal in the pole building using the current modem/router and then rely on the DIR-2310 to broadcast the signal to the house?

I'm thinking these two pieces is all I would need:

Thanks for all the help!
