All my files are 4GB in size on disk. Windows 8.1
« on: December 28, 2013, 12:46:13 AM »

Hello

I bought a Dlink NAS 320L (assuming this is the right sub forum) and I'm having an issue with it.

Everything works fine and I had no issues setting it up, however on my only windows 8.1 PC, all the files show as taking 4GB size on the disk.

Picture:

I have updated to the latest firmware and the problem still persist. This issue does not happen on my other pc's and laptops which all run windows 7. My windows 8 is fully updated as well.

I've spend several hours looking trough various google searches but I could only find one other case where this happened, but no sollution (it was on a linux machine, so no help there for me).

Disk checks out for errors and I'm in the process of backing up everything since I accidentally managed to cut/paste a whole bunch of my files to it rather then copy them from my other backup disk, (which is a 1TB seagate external one).

Does anyone know why my windows 8 is showing every file as being 4GB in size? Even files larger than that. It seems like a windows explorer issue but I cant find any fixes for it.

Mine does the same, but why does it matter?

It's properly some samba bug.

It's properly some samba bug.

It becomes an issue when storing lots of small work files. 500 small few kilobit files each taking up 4GB 'virtually' means I cant store more, because windows 8 tells me the disk is full.

Is this actually a problem, or is something you think will become a problem?

On my computer it reports the actual free space, which is accurate, but if I look at the properties of all the files placed on the drive, it reports my 3TB drive to be filled up by over 120 times capacity.

Mine works without any problems, but if yours is acting up, you should contact D-link support.

How do you get it as a network drive? When I add a network location it shows as a network folder* and doesn't allow me to see more info on it. Maybe that's part of the issue. I wouldn't mind if the display bug stays, but after the disks reaches past a certain point it throws "it's full" error messages.

In "This PC" you click Computer -> Map network drive

Chose your drive letter, and \\192.168.0.9\Volume_1 as your Folder.

Try and see if it makes any difference.

Hah, so that's where they hid map network drive. I used right click -> add network location which made it a folder.

The drive shows correct sizes, so that's good. Inside the drive the files still show as being 4GB in space on disk still. I'll see if I can copy over everything that used to fit on there. This will take a few hours, I'll update once I know if it still gives me "no room" errors.

Cheers for the help so far.

Edit; Seems to have worked. I can now at least use the drive. The problem has been reduced to merely a display bug using the "map network drive" instead of "map network location" function. I hope this helps others that experience the same bug.
