Stable firmware?
« on: May 20, 2009, 03:56:20 AM »

I have the DIR-655, and I would like to hear opinions as to what you think is the most stable version of the firmware. Please tell me why you think the version you recommend is the "best", and any caveats that come along with it. For example, disable feature "X" because it slows down DNS lookups, etc.

I am currently using 1.20, and from what I have read, this does;t seem to be the most stable version out there. I don't want to use the newest 1.3x until all the problems are ironed out.

Thanks for any opinions you decide to share!

Running the 1.31NA on A2 hardwrae.  No issues, nothing special done to make it work.

That pretty much leaves you with the 1.2x beta if you can find it. :) Your best bet is to read the change logs and decide for yourself if the problems addressed affect you and your network. Upgrading for the sake of upgrading is ill advised.

1.31NA works great for me except for the current Shareport Utility problems.

Caveats:

Manually set your Upload Speed in QOS to reflect your non-powerboosted connect speeds. (If you have Comcast or one of the other Powerboosting cable companies and QOS enabled)

Disable dynamic fragmentation if you are on broadband.

I have a really slow ISP (Suddenlink) with 3Mbps down and 512Kbps up.  I have had my A2 DIR-655 for around 2 years now.  It has given me continual problems especially with gaming (BF2, BF2142, FPS's, etc.)  Although I never had those connection issues before the 655 with a Network Everywhere router from Wal-Mart.

None of the firmwares or advice from this forum have given me much success.  I though that the 1.22b5 was working properly, but it soon acquired the same random slow downs and connection losses when gaming.  Yes I only game wired, and I only had one laptop that was N capable.

I don't have the N capable laptop anymore so I decided to pick up a WRT54GL.  I use it as my router and my 655 as a gigabit switch for my three wired LAN machines.

I did try the 1.31NA firmware while my Linksys was being shipped and it effectively strangled my bandwidth.  I couldn't get above 1.5Mbps down or 0.05Mbps up.

That's right 0.05Mbps upload.  Tried hard resetting with the 30/30/30 technique, reinstalling the firmware, and reconfiguring the router several times.  It's basically a brick to me now, err well it still functions as a switch.  Browser access is still functional but it's slow as a box of rocks.

Plugged in the WRT54GL, installed DD-WRT, and my speedtests are pegged out to the limit instantly with EVERY test.  I am getting what I pay for, even if it isn't much.

Haven't lost connection to a game server yet.  It's amazing how much I have been racking my brain to get my systems to work when all it took was a new router.  Not drivers, firmware, new cables, a new ISP, or anything else that has been suggested to me.

Wireless feels like wired speed on our new laptop that lacks N support!

It's a day and night difference.  I could have bought 3 of my Linksys for what I paid on this 655  a couple years ago, and I could have been playing my favorite games instead of constantly waiting for a firmware that would work right.

I am not telling you to get a Linksys.  There are plenty with no problems (so they say) with their DIR-655's.  I know that mine will be my first/last D-Link product.  I might give one of their gigabit switches a try, but I'll only be out 35 bucks, and I'll get that 655 that has been plaguing me out of sight.

Wait for comments from EddieZ.  He'll be sure to come along soon so he can jock D-Link's nuts some more.  I am sure he'll have something to say along the lines of what he wishes D-Link would command him to say, still longing for his strings to be pulled.

@ cesthree

My sentiments exactly. Worst customer support I have ever seen. Your best bet would be to sell it if you notice any issues with you dir-655

No issue with 1.31NA.

Just don't use pool.ntp.org as your NTP server. :)

Just a basic setup with Internet being RoadRunner Cable Modem.  No rules, no port forwarding, do have UPnP enabled.
