Port Mapping on a G604T - totally befuddled!
« on: January 12, 2014, 05:29:49 PM »

Hi Guys,

Firstly, I have no idea if this is the right place to post, but hopefully one of the more experienced posters may be able to advise me if that's the case.

My problem:

I have an old but (so far) reliable G604T which I use at home for our 2 Macs to access internet, email etc. I'm going off to work overseas for a short while and would like to access each of the home Mac's individually.

For a number of reasons (including cost), I won't be setting up a static IP for my home account, but have chosen to use a Dynamic IP hosting service - No-ip.com - this works very well for forwarding, and I'm happy with this service.

So Mac 1's dynamic name is -  macdesktop1@noip.com
and Mac 2's dynamic name is - macdesktop2@noip.com (not the real addresses of course but indicative of the one I setup)

Now the issue: Setting up port forwarding to one of the home Mac's is no problem at all, I'm using Remote Desktop (v 3.7) and have done this on a number of occasions, the problem is how on earth do I set up the G604T so that I can access BOTH Mac's?

I have each of the Macs set to static IP's within my home network, and thought it would be as easy as simply setting the Port Start/Port end as before, and then "mapping" the port to a different port number:

ie: Where Remote Desktop requires ports 3283 & 5900 to be forwarded:-
Protocol set to: TCP, UDP
Port Start - 3284    Port End - 3284                    Port Map - 3283     Port Map End - 3283
Port Start - 5901    Port End - 5901                    Port Map - 5900     Port Map End - 5900

Any advice or help would be very very welcome, as I'm pulling my hair out over this seemingly "easy" issue.

Thanks

Wow!

I can't believe no-one has responded yet!
Is it possibly that my post is in the wrong section?

If so, if anyone can point me in the right direction I'd very much appreciate it.

The thing which amazes me, is that when I called the D-Link help-desk, I was directed from an Australian front line desk, to a support officer from overseas who couldn't understand my problem. So the problem still remains.

I've posted in other forums, but no-one seems able to help with what would at first appear to be such a simple matter, and as the G604T is (understandably) no longer supported by D-Link, I'm at a loss where to ask now.

Surely someone somewhere has the answer ???

Not a great advert for D-Link in my books. Maybe the moderators would like to offer some help?

Link>Welcome!

  • What region are you located?

Have you reviewed the user manual for this modem?

Yes this is an out of date modem and I presume it works well. I don't have any experience with this modem so I don't know if I can be of any help. I presume if the modem is working well for you, one thing you might do is to bridge this modem and use it as a modem only and get you in to a DIR series router thats more up to date and would probably solve this issue as a alternative suggestion. I do have experience in working with DIR series routers. They work with bridged modems and would be a good compliment to this modem.

I would get into something newer that way there is better support for your needs. You could still use this modem is your access to your ISP, just connect it to a DIR series router then you should find better support. This poor modem is over 10 years old and still going.  ::)

Thanks,

. . . . .but I'm away as from tomorrow, and really needed to find a solution for the port mapping to get access to both machines while I'm away. I can't believe (even in other forums) that no-one has experience of setting this up on a G604T. The facility seems to be there in the router, but I'm obviously not understanding how it works.

Just need some input from a knowledgeable member or D-Link support tech.

Appreciate your comments, and I'll be upgrading on my return, but it doesn't help me at present unfortunately.

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
  • What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
  • What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?
  • What ISP Modem service link speeds UP and Down do you have?
