Primary/Secondary Dns server Defaults question
« on: January 24, 2014, 08:01:29 AM »

Hello-
For the first time in years I looked at the configuration of the router and noticed the DNS servers were set to 204.194.232.200 & 204.194.234.200 and are greyed out.

The manual states that 0.0....0 are the defaults.  I was wondering if the above 204xxx addresses had to be entered manually at some time or do they default to those somehow under automatic configuration.

I'm just concerned that someone is using those addresses to monitor my computer a la openDNS.

Could they be used by other programs too?

Am I being paranoid?

Thanks!

Link>Welcome!

  • What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the routers web page under status.
  • What region are you located?

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
  • What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
  • What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?
  • What ISP Modem service link speeds UP and Down do you have?

These are enabled sometimes by default as these are D-Link DNS servcies...it's you choice to leave them enabled or you can do the following:
  • Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual or under Setup/PARENTAL CONTROL/Set to>None: Static IP or Obtain Automatically From ISP.
  • Enable Use Unicasting (compatibility for some ISP DHCP Servers) under Setup/Internet/Manual.
  • Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking. Link>Finding Faster DNS Addresses using Name Bench and input new DNS addresses under Setup/Internet/Manual.

Thanks for the quick response!

HW:  B1
Firm: 2.02NA
Region:  USA Long Island
ISP: Cable (Optimum Cable vision)
CabModem: SciAtl Webstar
Not certain of speeds...sorry

I have no trouble using Dlink DNS servers as long as no one put them in for nefarious use.  I guess that is my real question...can these particular addresses be used by people using openDNS and the like?

Thank you!

The addresses are proprietary to D-Links DNS services. I presume others could use them, all it's doing is directing there DNS traffic to D-Links DNS servcies instead of using Default ISP DNS or any other 3rd party DNS service like OpenDNS. OpenDNS is the same thing as D-Links DNS service.
