Speed is being limited by the DIR-655 router to 65Mbps
« on: April 29, 2014, 06:23:42 PM »

This 300Mbps router started pout delivering 270Mbps and then dropped first 130Mbps, fluctuated for a while around that and now sits firmly on 65Mbps. What can I do to return it to max operating speed?

Thanks for coming back to me and my sincere apologies for the delay
- 655B
- 2.10NA
- NorCal outside San Francisco
- Both wired and wireless: problem is with the WIRELESS connection
- Yes, Factory reset and re-import of saved settings
- ATT DSL
- ActionTec GT784WN (wireless is disabled)
- Dynamic WAN IP
- 6.0/512 (Modem shows 768)

I appreciate any light you can throw on this. FYI the slowdown problem occurs with three different wireless adapters.

What mfr and model adapters are you using?

Wireless Configurations
Links>Wireless Installation Considerations and Managing Signal Congestion and Good Neighbour Policy
  • Ensure the default (dlink) SSID name is changed. Can be anything and not something that's already in use by any neighboring WiFi routers. Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
  • What wireless modes are you using?
  • 2.4Ghz Routers only: Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N?
  • Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
  • Try setting a manual Channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear.
  • What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto TPIK and AES.
  • What wireless devices do you have connected?
  • Any 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz cordless house phones or WiFi APs near by?
  • Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many?
  • If you have any of these options, Try turning OFF or ON Short GI, WLAN Partition, Extra Wireless Protection and HT 20/40 Co-existence if you have it. Also testing with HT20/40Mhz Co-existence enabled will impact results as well. I prefer to use this option OFF. Recommended settings are default. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

What version of FW was loaded before you installed v2.10? I would recommend doing a Factory Reset and not loading the prior saved configuration and test...

Do you have this on autopilot?!!

Thanks for the info:
- Netgear WN511B
- Netgear WNA3100
- Atheros 9285 802.11bgn (HP Pavilion standard)
- SSID is changed
- BGN
- Tried single mode N - no change
- Channel width on Auto 20/40: will try 20 oonly
- Will try manual channel setting
- No security - MAC address restrictions only
- Brother MFC-7860DW Printer
- DirecTV satellite receiver
- Panasonic cordless phone
- Several WiFi routers, all in some form of security mode
I'll post the results of trying the various options

Many thanks again.

If you have other WiFi routers near by, find a clear and unused channel to use if possible, 1, 6 or 11 is preferred.

If you can't, try setting Medium or Low power output settings and test again Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless. You may be in a WiFi congested area...

Ok, it seems there may be something in the voodoo world causing this slowdown! I have tried everything suggested (thanks for the input) but I am still sitting on 65Mbps. I plan now to uninstall the Atheros driver and reinstall to see if that clears up the problem.

Will advise.

Need to test each device out and narrow it down where you can. Check Mfr support sites for supported WiFi connection speeds. Not all adapters can do 300Mb or 130Mb. Also WiFi speeds are dependent upon some configurations as well.

I get 130Mb on my Mac book Pro. If I use a WiFi adapter that supports 300Mb, I can get 300Mb speeds.

There one more recent version of FW as well, as a last resort that you can try. Test your devices first and post back.

Keep us posted.

Just noticed that my printer connection runs at 130Mbps so I checked a bit further on the Atheros driver - it seems it has an identity crisis: doesn't really know if it is 'n' compatible or not! The reinstall came up as .11bg - no 'n'.

I'll try to find the correct 'n' driver for this and let you know.

btw, I tried the Netgear 3100 again and it started out at 5.5Mbps and slowly climbed to 13... Seems I have more than one problem here.

Thanks for the assistance.

Ok, sounds good. If the printer is connecting at higher rates, then I presume the issue is not on the router and with these drivers.  :-\

Good luck.
