Unable to connect to a simple DSL modem
« on: June 03, 2009, 02:55:10 AM »

Hi all,

I am new on this forum and not a network expert as well. 2 days ago my provider DSL router had broken down. I never have any issues with ma DIR-655 and this DSL router.
While waiting for a new one, I bought a simple DSL modem DMP111P from NetGear (no DLink available in my local store).
The DMP111P connected successfully to Internet and is fully functional when directly connected to a computer. Then I configured the DIR-655 in Dynamic IP as the IP address is provided by my ISP, Use Unicasting is checked or not and all other fields are not set.
My issue is that when the DIR-655 has finished to reboot after saving its new configuration, I have no way to access the admin page to check the network status - because none of my four computers have access to Internet. I always get a timed out session or am redirected on the gateway speed testing page. Disconnecting the cable between the DIR-655 and the DMP111 solves the problem immediately. I tried with another cable, same result.

I don't know if I am doing something wrong.

DIR-655 Rev A1 Firmware 1.21.
NetGear DMP111P Rev V1 Firmware 3.30J

Thanks.

Hope I'm not barking up the wrong tree here, but I think you are using your DIR-655 as a gateway now (I hope that is the right term). And in doing so, did you reassign the router IP address to something other than 198.162.0.1? If this is correct and you are using it as a gateway, from what I've read in this forum: although it can be done the 655 was not intended to fulfill this function. D-link encourages you to buy a gateway router (natcherly). I don't remember which thread it is but somewhere in here someone else received instructions on how to properly set this up. Now, the only question that remains unanswered is whether or not this hound dog is barking at a Fox or the moon.

Read this thread: "DIR-655 with comcast". It is on page 2 or 3. I already forgot. I "think" this topic discusses what you are attempting to do.
