Hi folks,

Kudos on the beta code updates to date; IMHO, major improvement.   

Curious, are there any plans to include Active Directory Services (ADS) support? 


I am aware that the DNS-343 product is targeted for small business and Active Directory but it would be nice to have similar support for the DNS-323 for those folks who purchased units before the DNS-343 released to market. 

With the advent of 1.5TB+ size drives, the DNS-323 is an ideal candidate for low redundancy requirements in a small business environment that have a very small number of users and where ADS is required. 

I work with some small clients that use their DNS-323's as a temporary storage location while working on daily projects. Although the data is eventually deleted at the end of the day, it would be handy to have it only accessible to members of the Small Business Server (SBS) domain as these same clients often have guests in their office who will connect to the network.

Like you, I purchased my DNS-323 shortly after it became available in 2006 - it sure would be nice to have AD support without having to replace perfectly good hardware.

This is a consumer product, not a SOHO or SMB product.  The DNS-323 doesn't support AD because it's not targeted for that market. 

Tell me where you can find a NAS that is fully supported by a phone number you can call that includes full AD functionality at a $129 price point and I'll show you a liar. 

Typically devices that include AD are more expensive and made for SMB markets.

Trust me I get you guys' point about how cool it would be to have it (wouldn't it?!) - then again that's why the DNS-343 is out there and has AD support.  You get what you pay for / know what you're buying before you pay for it.

What about the Buffalo Technology LinkStation Pro Duo (LS-W1.0TGL/R1)?

It comes with two 500GB drives installed, drives are worth at least $70 eh?
It has Active Directory support and a tech support phone 866-752-6210.

I'm not ragging on D-Link, I really like my DNS-323 (I have two of them). 
Nor am I a Buffalo Tech fan boy (truth is, I own two of the Buffalo Tech NAS products).

The Samba package D-Link uses for the DNS-323 has AD functionality.
Google "dns-323 active directory" to see how others have dealt with this issue.

D-Link chooses to implement AD for the DNS-343, and not the DNS-323.
That is just how D-Link chooses to structure their product line, doesn't mean
the users can't ask for this feature to be added.

Ya kinda proved my point.  It took two years for Buffalo to develop a version of their firmware that worked with Windows Server 2008 after it was released.  With WS08 R2 coming out the door in less than a month, the schema changes may break the Buffalo devices.  Again you get what you pay for.

Well, I don't see how you reach that conclusion, but I don't want to engage in a debate
with you just for the sake of macho posturing. 

As I understand, Active Directory integration on a Linux based NAS is provided by the Samba
package (www.samba.org).  Any NAS device's AD compatibility with a Windows Server OS is
mostly dependent on the version of samba which that NAS's manufacture chooses to
implement, the features available in that version of Samba, and which features the
manufactures decides to expose to the users.

I think hilaireg, fordem and Piotr were very polite with their enhancement request, and we can
only speculate whether it is reasonable for D-Link to implement this feature request.

Active Directory integration is possible on the DNS-323, just not within the D-Link provided firmware.
