DNS-320L - 'Link Speed' problem: read speed drops to half
« on: April 12, 2014, 05:08:09 AM »

hi everyone
I'm fighting against a problem with my dns-320L, almost one month passed with no results:

when I set my NAS Link Speed to 100M I'm having ~8/8.5MB/s in read/write speeds
if I switch to Auto or 1000M, the write speed has a light increase but read speed drops to half (~3,5MB/s)

dns-320L is cable connected with netgear d6300 router
I checked in router interface and it does actually switch from 100M/Full to 1000M/Full when changing the nas option
tested with stock firmware 1.02 and with betas 1.03b04/b06 with config reset, tried with multiple pcs of the network, ftp/cifs/nfs speeds are similar, changed cables (cat5e), router slots, hard disk is ok (wd red 4tb, 2tb free)
I even tried installing fun_plug and watching resources and cpu load from inside, always low% with some spikes of 25%/50%
tried different mtu values, almost no change in speeds, no errors/dropped packets.

[update] a strange thing happens when I open two shell on the nas, one with iperf -s, the other with iperf -c<external ip>, the packets should go through the router and come back to the nas itself (1000M enabled) the speed is still ~3.5MB/s but sometimes goes up to ~5-7.5MB/s

someone can help?
thanks in advance :)

Do you have access to a spare switch that you can connect the DNS-320L and a PC to test throughput? This will rule out any router-based issues.

I experienced a somewhat different issue with two of my ShareCenters. When connected directly to my router, ShareCenter data throughput was abysmally low (I don't recall specific values). After connecting the ShareCenters to a switch, throughput increased close to the maximum levels that I expected to see. I currently have two ShareCenters connected to a switch, and the switch is tethered to the router. Now all devices connected to the router have good R/W throughput when accessing the two ShareCenters located on the switch. To this day, I can't tell you why performance is poor when the ShareCenters are connected directly to the router on my LAN.

thanks for the answer, JavaLawyer
I made a tcpdump from a test pc and it seems like packets that go from the nas to the router are kind of hard limited in size when reading at gigabit speed, i made two quick screenshots
100M read: http://oi61.tinypic.com/j9bqth.jpg
gigabit read: http://oi61.tinypic.com/2s99chv.jpg
unfortunately right now I just have a old fast ethernet switch, not useful for the test
