D-link DIR-655 Firmware
« on: April 07, 2014, 06:04:32 PM »

Hello D-link and all,  ;D
I own a D-link DIR-655 Router, with the following Hardware and Firmware Details:
Hardware Version: A4
Firmware Version: 1.34WW

Thing is, I live in the USA, but had purchased the router in Israel few years ago.
I just wanted to make sure b4 possibly bricking the device, is it possible to download the latest firmware to the device from the D-link USA website (AKA http://support.dlink.com/ProductInfo.aspx?m=DIR-655), or do I have to use the D-link Israel website having purchased the router in Israel??
I will point out that the Israeli D-link site is a mess and holds an old firmware version (2011) as the latest one, while the USA site holds the very latest firmware for my router (Nov.2013).

Any reply is appreciated Guys!!  ::) ::)

FurryNutz, 10x, appreciate your reply here.
Took some time to research this issue, including advice from D-link Israel Support.
According to the label at the back of the router here are the technicalities of the firmware/model:
Quote
P/N: XXX655EEU....A4G
H/W Ver.:A4
F/W Ver.:1.21WW
Mind you, the firmware after updating it few years ago is:1.34WW.
According to the D-link Israel support's reply, the latest most updated firmware for my device can be found at
ftp://ftp.dlink.ru/pub/Router/DIR-655/Firmware/REV_A/.
Interestingly, it's from D-link Russia, so I'm afraid engaging with this, moreover according to the router's label as stated above, I think the EU letters showing, suggests that the router can handle well EU firmwares, is that a correct assumption?
Needless to say that EU firmwares for this router that are much more recent do exist, so I've ruled out the NA firmwares, but what about the EU ones?

Thanks again :D

You can get EU FW from here:
http://www.dlink.com/uk/en/support/product/dir-655-wireless-n-gigabit-router

However since you live in the NA region, this router maybe behave differently from NA region router since there are differences between NA and EU regions. Mainly WiFi. It would be best to have NA region router if your current location is with in the NA region...Not sure if applying NA region FW could be performed...it's possible, however not sure about operation and performance afterwards...

10x again,  ;D

Just one more thing that baffles me, If the device can handle well EU firmwares, it's rather strange that the it came originally from the factory with WW firmware, rather than EU one, don't you think? :-\

In any event, I'm scheduled to be in Berlin next month, so I'll be taking the device with me and give it a shot there with the EU firmware, then I'll use the router in the US, and then compare the performance in Berlin to the one in the US, and post my final thoughts here.   ::)

EU routers can also use WW FW as well.

Keep us posted on how it goes.
