Router Won't Work
« on: July 14, 2014, 07:49:24 PM »

A few nights ago my internet abruptly stopped working, and now every single time I attempt to open up a web page I am prompted with the the following page: http://dlinkrouter/error-404.htm, or with an error message saying, "Oops!  The page you requested is not available" - it suggests checking to see if my internet settings on my router are set correctly (such as my PPPoE username & password settings), but I haven't a clue as to whether or not they are, nor the slightest as to how to change them correctly.

I've tried numerous Google search result fixes but to absolutely no avail (and in all likelihood dug myself deeper). The only way I've been able to connect is directly through the modem.   Although, I have tried both mine and my girlfriends laptop through the modem and only her Windows 8 worked, so I'm not sure what that says?  (My Windows Vista laptop wouldn't connect to the internet even through the modem).

Anyway, in a last ditch effort I've decided to write here in hopes of help.  It's becoming extremely bothersome at this point and I just have no idea how to approach fixing it.  So thanks in advanced for any help.

Link>Welcome!

  • What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the routers web page under status.
  • What region are you located?
  • Are you wired or wireless connected to the router?
  • Has a Factory Reset been performed?

Please confirm the D-Link router model number...

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
  • What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
  • What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?
  • Is ISP Modem/Service using Dynamic or Static WAN IP addressing?
  • What ISP Modem service link speeds UP and Down do you have?
  • Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Link> Cat6 is recommended.
  • Check ISP MTU requirements, Cable is usually 1500, DSL is around 1492 down to 1472. Call the ISP and ask. Link>Checking MTU Values
  • For DSL/PPPoE connections on the router, ensure that "Always ON" option is enabled.

Hardware Version: l1
Firmware Version : 3.01
Region: Canada
Wire/Wirelessly:  Wirelessly connected to router.
Factory Reset:  Yes, several times but again, to no avail.

ISP service:  Cable.
ISP Modem Mfr. and model: Motorola. Model: SB5102
Is ISP Modem/Service using Dynamic or Static WAN IP addressing?:  I have absolutely no idea.  How do I determine this?
What ISP Modem service link speeds UP and Down do you have?:  Can I determine this on speedtest.net, or other such speed websites?  -- 20mb download & 0.5mb upload.
For DSL/PPPoE connections on the router, ensure that "Always ON" option is enabled:  How would I go about doing this?

Thanks again.  Apologies for the very obvious layman.

Can you confirm the FW version on the routers web page?

I'm seeing that for Rev I models, that v9.03 is what is available here:
http://support.dlink.ca/ProductInfo.aspx?m=DIR-615

Was the routers FW updated recently by chance or has it never been updated?

PC 3rd Party Security Software Configurations
  • Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
  • Turn off all devices accept for one wired LAN PC while testing.
  • Disable any downloading client software managers, i.e. Torrents or similar.

PC Web Browser Configurations
What browser are you using?
Try Opera or FF? If IE 8, 9, 10 or 11, set compatibility mode and test again.
Disable any security browser Add-ons like No Script and Ad-Block or configure them to allow All Pages when connected to the router.
Clear all browser caches.
Be sure to log into the Admin account on the router.
Try turning off these features in Chrome:
Top right corner, little bars for options > Settings > Settings (on left) > Show advanced settings.
Uncheck these:
Use a web service to help resolve navigation errors
Use a prediction service to help complete searches and URLs typed in the address bar
Predict network actions to improve page load performance
Enable phishing and malware protection

Firmware has never been updated to my knowledge.  I use FireFox web browser and no other web browsers seem to work either.  (I am warranted with the same error message for all).  The only thing that has worked is directly connecting to the modem.  Or connecting an Ethernet cable to the router from the modem, and another through the router to the computer.

Ok, I recommend updating FW from here:
http://support.dlink.ca/ProductInfo.aspx?m=DIR-615

Please use this process to do it:
 FW Update Process

Reset, load the file, reset again then set up from scratch...

Let us know how it goes.

Router firmware is now updated, but wireless still not working.  Perhaps I'm setting it up incorrectly?  Is there any way to factory reset completely, and then just start from scratch and make a new wireless network to connect to?

Thanks again.

Yes, you can use the button in back or use the routers web page under Tools/System...

Maybe someone can review your router settings with you using Link> teamviewer if your interested. Its safe and secure.

Alright sweet - any tutorials around that you could recommend on resetting the router and creating a network/wireless network properly?

Thank you

Also, do you think that would work though?  Complete factory reset with a new (wireless) network to connect to?

Yes a factory reset then set up from scratch with a wired PC connected to the router and log into the routers web page. Under Setup/Wireless/Manual is where you can set up the wireless for your needs.

Id' review this to see if any of the suggestions help:
