Internet starts great, then quickly slows to crawl.
« on: June 29, 2014, 10:58:14 AM »

Firmware Version :     2.11NA , 18, Jul, 2013
ISP is Comcast
Modem is Motorola Surfboard SB6121
Located in the Midwest

Down should be about 55Mbps, up is around 12Mpbs.
Lately, after a reboot of modem/router, it'll show these speeds... then minutes later it goes down to 12Mbps/10Mbps (Up rarely seems affected, just down)

This is with no traffic going on. No torrents/streaming/downloads. Just happens on it's own.

Let me know what other info I can provide.

Modem Signals:

Downstream
Signal to Noise Ratio - 36dB, 36dB, 37dB, 37dB
Power Level - -2dBmV, -2dBmV, -2dBmV, -1dBmV

Upstream
Power Level - 47dBmV, 46dBmV, 45dBmV

Config
Fave Freq: 561000000
DOCSIS MIMO: Honor MDD IP Mode
Modem's IP Mode: IPv6 Only
DHCP Enabled

Router settings:

Connection Type:     DHCP Client
Cable Status :     Connected
Network Status :     Established
StreamEngine :     Disabled
Connection Up Time :     0 Day, 0:18:22
MAC Address :     *snip*
IP Address :     *snip*
Subnet Mask :     255.255.240.0
Default Gateway :     *snip*
Primary DNS Server :     75.75.75.75
Secondary DNS Server :     75.75.76.76
Advanced DNS :     Disabled

Looks like my Router MAC is using my PC MAC, cloned at some point.  I could never get the DIR-655 to do the "automatic network configuration", always failed.

Dynamic IP settings are mostly blank, aside from the MTU (1500), and my PC's mac address.  I've used the Google DNS off and on, to try and resolve the issue.  I seem to get FREQUENT issues with DNS, constantly having to flush and re-register DNS in order to get Internet working.

Link>Welcome!

  • Are you wired or wireless connected to the router?
  • Was a Factory Reset performed before and after any firmware updates then set up from scratch?
FW Update Process
  • Was the router working before any firmware updates?

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
Most ISP don't need any MAC Cloning. You you might ask your ISP about this.

  • Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Link> Cat6 is recommended.
  • Check ISP MTU requirements, Cable is usually 1500, DSL is around 1492 down to 1472. Call the ISP and ask. Link>Checking MTU Values
  • For DSL/PPPoE connections on the router, ensure that "Always ON" option is enabled.
  • If the ISP modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems: Link>Double NAT and How NAT Works. To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged. If the modem can't be bridged then see if the modem has a DMZ option and input the IP address the router gets from the modem and put that into the modems DMZ. Also check the routers DHCP IP address maybe conflicting with the ISP modems IP address of 192.168.0.1. Check to see if this is the same on the ISP modem, and if modem can't be bridged, change the DIR router to 192.168.1.1 or .0.254.
Example of a D-Link router configured for PPPoE with ISP Modem bridged: PPPoE Configuration on Router

I recommend that you have your ISP check the cabling going to the ISP modem, check signal levels going to the ISP modem. For DSL or Fiber service lines, ensure that the ISP is using good working phone or cable lines to the  modem and that the phone lines are filtered correctly. For cable Internet, RG-6 coaxial cable is needed, not RG-59. Check for t.v. line splitters and remove them as they can introduce noise on the line and lower the signal going to the ISP modem. I recommend having the ISP service physically check the lines going from the out side to the ISP modem. Connecting to the ISP modem could result in a false positive as the signal to the modem could be just enough to that point then adding on a router, could see problems. The router operation is dependent upon getting good data flow from the ISP modem and the modem is dependent upon getting good signal from the ISP Service.

Are you using IPv6 native from your ISP thru the ISP modem?

Router and Wired Configurations
Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1. Use IE, Opera or FF to manage the router. Besure to log into the Admin account on the router.
  • Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options, Advanced/QoS[/url]
  • Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual or under Setup/PARENTAL CONTROL/Set to>None: Static IP or Obtain Automatically From ISP.
  • Enable or Disable Use Unicasting (compatibility for some ISP DHCP Servers) and test under Setup/Internet/Manual. Disable may help with speed performance on higher speed ISP services.
  • Turn on DNS Relay  under Setup/Networking. Link>Finding Faster DNS Addresses using Name Bench and input new DNS addresses under Setup/Internet/Manual.
  • Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking. This ensures each devices gets its own IP address when turned on and connected, eliminates IP address conflicts and helps in troubleshooting and maintain consistency for applications that need to connect as well as mapped drives.
  • Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
  • If IPv6 is an option on the router, select Local Connection Only under Setup/IPv6.
  • Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall. Enable or Disable SPI to test.
  • Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking. Disable uPnP for testing Port Forwarding rules. Enable IPv6 Multi-cast Streaming for routers that have a Media Server option. Disable IPv6 Multi-cast Streaming if IPv6 or Media Server is not being used.
  • Turn off WISH, and WPS under Advanced.
  • WAN Port Speed set to Auto or specific speed? Some newer ISP modems support 1000Mb so manually setting to Gb speeds can be supported by the router. Advanced/Advanced Networking/WAN Port Speed
  • Set current Time Zone, Date and Time. Use an NTP Server feature. The DST setting is only needed in the NA region. Tools/Time.

How are you testing speeds? Wired or wireless? Wired is recommended and preferred for doing any speed testing.

Always wired
During the previous firmware update, I don't believe I performed a factory reset
I've had various other issues that caused me to do previous firmware updates, so I can't say it was "working", but it was likely a different state of "not working"

All cables have been swapped, including the coax.
Surfboard does not have a built-in router

I only recently enabled IPv6 on my PC. Disabled it for troubleshooting.

Traffic shaping is off. "Auto uplink speed" is checked, grayed out. Measured Not Estimated. Enable QoS Engine is Checked Grayed out. Auto classification and dynamic frag are both also checked and grayed out.

However, no QoS engine rules are enabled.

Advanced DNS is off.
Unicasting is off.
I turned on DNS relay prior to making this thread, based on your suggestions in another thread.
I set a reservation for my PC.
Devices are auto-obtain.
Neither PC is utilizing IPv6 at the moment.
uPnP and Multicast are on.
WISH has always been off.
WAN port speeds were Auto. I just changed to Gig.
NTP now set.

My computer is stuck on "Identifying" the network connection, says no network access... yet here I am using the internet without issue. Not sure what that's about...

Just watched a Steam download go from 7MB, slowly down to a few KB, drop connection, then immediately hop back up to 6.5MB down.  It almost behaves like that Torrent issue I had in the past, where it uses too many connections and destroys the network.  Surely Steam doesn't utilize P2P, though...

I recommend that you do a reload of the FW using the FW update process. Turn OFF ALL other devcies accept for one PC, download the FW file to the desktop, then turn OFF the ISP modem and let it reset. Factory reset the router, upload the file, factory reset once again, Turn ON the ISP modem and set the router up from scratch.

Disable TS and QoS and run some tests before turning on the other devcies.

PC 3rd Party Security Software Configurations while you update FW.
  • Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
  • Turn off all devices accept for one wired LAN PC while testing.
  • Disable any downloading client software managers, i.e. Torrents or similar.

Alright, got around to installing the firmware from scratch.

Past two days have been about the same, up and down.  Last night it was just fine, 55+ down... and now I'm looking at it, it's barely 4-5 down.  Can't pinpoint what's causing it... but a long reboot of the modem and router tends to alleviate the issue, if only for a short while.

Edit:  I just watched the router "reboot" itself or something... lights went out, then started up again.  And now the speed is great (although fluctuating slightly).  HAS to be a problem with the router...

Edit2:  Now getting DNS errors on websites.  If I want them to work, I'll have to flush/register DNS.  Can't even navigate to 192.168.0.1 now... probably have to reboot router, even though internet is working for the most part.

So odd.

Edit3: I'm now seeing it's not keeping logs before a reboot... I just restarted it, and now all I have are bootup logs from today at 6:23... and no longer have the logs I posted here.  If that's truly the case... I doubt the logs above help, as the "cause" of the reboot would likely not be kept.

Do you get any similar problems if you directly connect the PC to the modem?

  • Any 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz cordless house phones or WiFi APs near by?
  • Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many?

Router Placement
Forum User - "Well I feel really dumb. After moving the router away from other electronic devices my speeds are back to normal. Just a heads up for anyone experiencing slow speeds, you might want to move it away from other electronics and see if that helps."
3-6' feet minimum safe distance between devices.
Placement on main level floor and central in the building and WELL ventilated is preferred. Not in basements or closets as building materials, or near by electronics devices could interfere or hinder good signal propagation.

One thing to try if you have friend, family or neighbor, try this router at there place as a test to see if the problem follows, then you'll know if it's truly a router problem or something else. I have this same router along with the same ISP modem and I don't see any issues with it.

Maybe someone can review your router settings with you using Link> teamviewer if your interested. Its safe and secure.

Sorry for the delay in response. It's just been non-stop frustration.

The issue is only consistent when plugged into router. Not when it's just the modem.
I moved the router around, trying to get it away from other electronics, no change.
No other wireless phones/devices nearby.

It's consistently only working after each reboot. And, after each reboot, I'm required to ipconfig /release and /renew before the computer can get out to the internet. Every single time.

The speed will be high immediately after every reboot... then fall slowly until it's just a crawl. Does this every time.

Looks like I'm beyond my return date from buying it on amazon, too. So it's looking like I'm out of luck unless you have any other suggestions to try?

Have you set up Reserved IP addresses on the router for ALL devices?

Is Traffic Shaping disabled?

I had reserved IPs for all devices.  Shaping is disabled.

If you'd like to check out my router config, I'm fine with that for later on this evening.

Would you try this?
1. Save router config to file first using IE or FF with all security add-ons disabled.
2. Factory reset the router with all other devices disconnected or turned OFF accept for 1 wired PC.
3. Reload or Update the FW using IE or FF. Just download the FW file to your local wired LAN PC.
4. Factory reset the router and then set up from scratch first and test with out loading the saved config from file. Check to see if any problems are fixed before loading the saved config from file.

If you notice the same issue, do the same process and this time load up the v2.03 version.

Also, I recommend that you have your ISP check the cabling going to the ISP modem, check signal levels going to the ISP modem. For DSL or Fiber service lines, ensure that the ISP is using good working phone or cable lines to the DSL modem and that the phone lines are filtered correctly.

Any status on this?  ???

I had reserved IPs for all devices.  Shaping is disabled.

If you'd like to check out my router config, I'm fine with that for later on this evening.
