DIR-651 loses connection
« on: July 13, 2014, 08:01:11 AM »

My DIR-651 loses connection to wired devices when SPI is enabled in firewall settings. Anyone else experience this?

Secondly, When I have guest zone enabled, rarely do both zones go to 40mhz bandwidth, most time the guest network goes to 40 mhz bandwidth and the primary zone stays 20 mhz. Seems like the device should prioritize my primary zone.

  • What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the routers web page under status.
  • What region are you located?
  • Are you wired or wireless connected to the router?
  • Has a Factory Reset been performed?
  • Was a Factory Reset performed before and after any firmware updates then set up from scratch?
FW Update Process
  • Was the router working before any firmware updates?

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
  • What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
  • What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?
  • Is ISP Modem/Service using Dynamic or Static WAN IP addressing?
  • What ISP Modem service link speeds UP and Down do you have?
  • Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Link> Cat6 is recommended.
  • Check ISP MTU requirements, Cable is usually 1500, DSL is around 1492 down to 1472. Call the ISP and ask. Link>Checking MTU Values
  • For DSL/PPPoE connections on the router, ensure that "Always ON" option is enabled.

This model router may not support 40Mhz channel width while Guest Zone is enabled or something maybe causing the router to fall back to 20Mhz when Guest Zone. I recommend that you phone contact your regional D-Link support office and ask for help and information regarding this. We find that phone contact has better immediate results over using email.
Let us know how it goes please.

This works on occasion with both zones at 40mhz.

What region are you located?

Something maybe causing the router to fall back to 20Mhz when Guest Zone. You may need to turn OFF all WiFi devices then turn on one at a time to see what the connection rates are. You might find which device is not connecting at 40Mhz. Some devices may not support 40Mhz connection rates.

I am in Florida. I will try out the method you describe. So I understand 20 mhz devices cannot function within a network working at 40 mhz?
Thanks,
Robert

the router will fall back to 20Mhz if you have any 20Mhz devices connected.

Good to know.

Another question, when I have auto 20/40 mhz enabled one of my laptops stays connected but get dns errors and the reported speed drops from 300 or 144 to 1-2 mbps. ANy ideas?

Also my iphone 5s is having problems connecting as well. I have currently changed this to 20 mbps and now the system is more stable. My old router which was taken out by lightning did not have this issue (another brand).

Ensure the laptops WiFi drivers are up to date.
What OS is the LT running?

  • What wireless modes are you using?
  • 2.4Ghz Routers only: Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N?
  • Try setting a manual Channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear. 13 for EU regions.
  • What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto TPIK and AES.
  • Any 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz cordless house phones or WiFi APs near by?
  • Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many?
  • Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual or under Setup/PARENTAL CONTROL/Set to>None: Static IP or Obtain Automatically From ISP.
  • Enable or Disable Use Unicasting (compatibility for some ISP DHCP Servers) and test under Setup/Internet/Manual. Disable may help with speed performance on higher speed ISP services.
  • Turn on DNS Relay  under Setup/Networking. Link>Finding Faster DNS Addresses using Name Bench and input new DNS addresses under Setup/Internet/Manual.
