Moving files on the DNS-323
« on: July 27, 2009, 08:35:28 AM »

Hi all,

What is the quickest way to copy/move files from one folder to another on the DNS-323?  When you simply do a Windows copy/move, it brings the file up to the Windows machine and then copies it back to the new folder over the network.  This can prove to be very slow with larger files.  I used to be able to do a move using the FTP server which was instantaneous, but ever since upgrading to the newer firmware, the FTP server will not allow me to do this anymore.

Any suggestions?

I'm confused by these posts.  I regularly move large files and directories in Vista on the DNS323 and they are instantaneous; they are being moved, not copied.
For example, I move large 4GB files from the BT to somewhere on Volume_1 and it is finished instantly.

That is odd, because I'm using Vista and when I move a large file, it takes forever.  I'm assuming it's copying up to the machine and back to the server, however I suppose it could just be extremely slow?  If I wanted to move a 1GB file, it would take at least 20-30 minutes.

you could use the scheduling feature and move it from one folder to another, that would be very quick since it is all internal

i have done this many times moving from volume_1 to volume_2 and it is much faster then moving it though windows explorer on my pc

Thanks for the tip.  I'll give this a try when I get home.  However, I wish it would just work as designed...

When I move files within the same volume they move instantly.  But I am using a Mac.  I expect it is how your Windoze box is set up.

You could also use an FTP client to perform the move.  That way it would occur on the FTP server and should be instantaneous.

I am using Windows XP Pro on all 5 of my computers and move files on the same volume of my DNS with no problem at all (instantaneous) but I only move the files under the same share not between two different shares.

The FTP solution worked on 1.06, but after upgrading I am getting permission denied errors when trying to move via FTP.  This is very odd.  I tried moving files via my mapped drives (same volume) and was slow.  Also tried moving via folders in Network Neighborhood with the same result.

Fact of the matter is that I really shouldn't have to use FTP to move files to get instant moves...

hey rodent,

if i move it on the same share it is instantaneous as well, it is when i am moving from volume_1 to volume_2 that it brings it to the local machine and then back down which really slows the process down

Yeah just cut and paste to the same volume should be pretty much instantaneous just changing the directory info of the file.

When moving files between two different shared or drive letters even if the shares or drives are on the same volume windows will treat this as if they where two different disks and will copy the files first and than delete the source once the file copy is complete for each file.

So if your trying to move files around on Volume_1 map a drive at a level that can see the source and destination locations.

and if your trying to move files from Volume_1 to Volume_2 the quickest will be the scheduling feature as suggested by klein.

happy moving...

Where can I find this Scheduling Feature with the 323?  I looked thru all the menus and was not able to find it.
Thanks
