I have a dns320 configured as raid 1 ( mirroring ) and now it's inaccessible via my network.

I can log into the admin page via the IP ... and when I do it takes me straight to the hard drive configuration page ( suggesting that it's lost it's raid configuration ? ) ... I have tried restarting it a couple of times to no avail. I think there's a hard reset but I haven't tried that I don't know exactly what it does and the data on the device is pretty valuable.

I ran a quick smart test and drive 1 failed ( don't know why or how to get results ) ... Drive 2 passed. I am running the full test now.

I am a bit unsure what I'm looking for here or what way to proceed. My understanding was that in a raid 1 array if one drive failed i could just replace it and re mirror it and carry on, assuming the 320 itself is not damaged  ... but even if that's the case I need to get this drive operating again quickly as it's got lots of project stuff for work on it with I need to access urgently. So if I can't get both drives operating again I'd like to at least get one until I can replace the damaged one ( if indeed it is damaged) .

What I really need is something like "fault-finding procedures" for this scenario so that I would have a clear map of what to test, how to test it, in what order etc .... so that I could see my options and develop a strategy.

Any help extremely appreciated.

HI, you could try the factory reset via the little hole between the power connection and the ethernet port.  Use a toothpick or paperclip and while powered on, keep the toothpick in for a good 10 seconds and then release it.  This should have no effect on the data but will wipe out your users and preferences etc.  If this doesn't work, I would then try and just remove the hd which is coming up as failed / failing and reboot to see if you can then access your data.  If successful, run the manufacturer's drive testing software on the "bad" drive to see if it shows errors.  If you can not access the good drive via the NAS, then you are looking at trying to recover your data from one or the other drive.

Also a strong recommendation is to pick up a UPS, even a low wattage model can easily handle these low power devices with ease.
The fact that you can reach the admin page is a good sign that the issue is with one or more of your hd's not the whole unit.  Good luck

Thanks ... that was helpful ... unfortunatly none of it worked ... and I don't know why it's reporting on of the drives as passed and still it wont boot up with that one. I tried rstudio and it basically found nothing but the folder tree. I also tried a live linux cd but I can't seem to get the drive mounted ( basicly because I haven't got a clue how to use linux )

Hi,
I am not sure what the issues are with the software might be, but depending on the value of data, a Linux savy friend, or a local computer repair shop might be a consideration but you want to make it clear that you just want to transfer any existing data to another drive perhaps in NTFS format. 
Something you could do yourself if you have a spare hard drive or two is to try installing them in your 320 and see if you can format, configure, and transfer some data, to determine if the 320 is otherwise functioning normally.  Part of the problem with troubleshooting such a situation as yours is that more than one element could have been damaged.  This last suggestion will only help to determine if your 320 is damaged.  You know if you ran the manufacturers test on the "failed" drive, what that status is...right?

Thanks ... yes I might have to try a local shop in the end; but my experience so far has been then the ones around here tend not to have much linux experience. Hopefully I'm wrong. Meanwhile I'd like to expend every avenue I can do my self.
Really all I want to do at this stage is get the data off the 'good' drive. I'm a bit confused. I know that Raid is not meant as a backup because of viruses and the possibility of deleting/formatting etc ... and I do have backups of most of the data but the most recent stuff is the most important to me .... really this NAS system was not 100% finished ( in the sense that I was still investigating an amazon account for offsite backup when the drive failed ) ...  but still  I thought that if anything went wrong with one of the drives it would be easy to get the data off the other, but it seems that it's not that easy, which makes me wonder what the point of a RAID 1 is in the first place ....  I've had no success with this either on windows or linux. I';m on a linux live ubuntu at the moment with the drive plugged in via a usb caddy but it cant bee found I dont know why

 I haven't fully recovered the data yet as it's a long process but it does look like it's processing it correctly and with good results.

Also thanks again to cable2 for the help I received here ... once I've recovered the data I can try to format the drives and faultfind the drives and unit. ( and I'll set up my amazon s3 first rather than last this time  )
