Just got the 825
« on: June 20, 2009, 10:25:54 AM »

I just got the 825.  I wanted gigabit capability, plus my old Linksys didn't support WPA.  I did a lot of research before-hand, so I knew what i was getting into.  Here's a quick summary of how things are going mostly trouble-free.  I am overwhelmed by all the possible settings, but that seems to be standard for these types of routers:

- Installation went quick, although the quick-setup didn't cover all the main issues.  I had to change the internal address range from 1-100 to 100-255 due to previously assigned addresses that I wanted to keep.

- all the software I have (games, BT, communication) had no issues with the new router.  I didn't use any special rules, just out-of-box setup

- I disabled the 5GHz range since I don't have any "n" wireless units.  I also forced it to use "g" at the highest transmit rate

- The Wii had no issues connecting, faster than the old router

- Problem #1 is that my ubuntu laptop can no longer see the Windows network neighborhood.  I can connect via IP, but can't browse the system. This must be a security setting somewhere.

- Problem #2 is that the wireless connections seem to drop when they are idle.  The Wii is fine on Mario Karts, and there is no drop.  But a laptop sitting unused or just reading a long web page may sometimes drop.  Streaming video (hulu) isn't affected, though.  Not sure if this is related to the drops that everyone else is talking about.

I haven't used any of the advanced features like QoS, WISH, etc.  I'll start playing with them one at a time.

I have the same problem as #1 with my Mac.  None of my networked computers show up when I hit Browse except for one machine and its the one running Windows Server, none of my XP/Vista machines show up.  It was like this with my 634M as well, and I can't fix it no matter what settings I change, I think it's a dlink thing.

The odd part is that my windows machines can see each other.  It's just the ubuntu laptop that can't.  It's not that big of a deal, but annoying.  I'll have to checkout the ubuntu forums.

Oh, and it looks like I have the original "A" hardware and the 1.01 firmware date 2008/9/10.

After having the 825 for a few weeks, I found out some interesting stuff.

I have 1 wired PC, 1 wired NAS, and 3 wireless laptops (Lenovo, Dell, and HP).  The Lenovo and HP are running windows XP, and the Dell is running Ubuntu.  I also have  Wii that uses a wireless connection.

It looks like the Lenovo and Dell have NO connection issues whatsoever.  They connect quickly upon boot/unsuspend and there are no drops of connections.  The Wii also works well.

The HP, on the other hand, seems to drop wireless connections fairly often.  I'm not sure why the HP does this.  Since the other 2 laptops and the Wii are fine, I'm thinking there is something specific to the HP that is causing it to drop connections.  I haven't found anything obvious, though.

For now, it's not an issue.  As I suspected, however, the faster gigabit router has exposed the rest of my system (namely the wired PC) as being the slow bottleneck in the system.  Oh well.  It's 4 years old.  Time to get a new one.
